Terminator to return to screens in unexpected Netflix reboot
The Terminator franchise will be revived in the form of a Netflix anime series.
The Terminator franchise is one of Hollywood’s most iconic. Kicking off all the way back in 1984’s The Terminator, the Arnold Schwarzenegger-led film series has spawned five sequels, a live-action TV spin-off, multiple video games and countless comic books. It also made a household name out of both Schwarzenegger and director James Cameron and the first of those follow-ups is considered one of the best sequels – and action movies – of all time.
Unfortunately, recent offerings have failed to capture viewers’ imaginations in the way that the earlier films did, with the recent Dark Fate bombing at the box-office in spite of a relatively strong critical reception – leaving the future of the franchise in doubt.
However, it turns out that The Terminator stayed true to his word as the world of Terminator will indeed be back!
The Terminator franchise returns in Netflix anime series
As revealed by Variety, Netflix is reviving the Terminator franchise with an anime series. It’s currently in the early stages of development as the streaming service is partnering with Skydance – who produced both Dark Fate and the previous film Genisys. It will be produced in partnership with Production I.G – who previously worked on anime shows such as Ghost In The Shell.

Mattson Tomlin – who wrote the script for Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman – will serve as the showrunner of the series and he will also executive produce it.
It’s unknown what the show will actually be about but Tomlin revealed that the series “breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.”
This is a major step forward for the Terminator franchise as the failure of Dark Fate resulted in the cancellation of two more sequels that would have seen Linda Hamilton return as Sarah Connor once again. In spite of that, it’s clear that Skydance isn’t ready to give up on the Hollywood royalty film series and this unexpected direction could be exactly what a franchise as relevant as the Terminator needs to rediscover that relevancy.
