Tom Holland opens up about the surprising future of Spider-Man in the MCU
Tom Holland’s current contract will conclude with Spider-Man: No Way Home but will he be renewing it?
In an interview with Collider, Tom Holland confirmed that he will have fulfilled his contractual obligations with both Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios by appearing in upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home.
At this moment in time, we are uncertain whether there will be any additional standalone Spider-Man films but there have been rumors of a potential Spider-Man 4 in the future, so this might come as a surprise to some MCU fans.
Holland, promoting his latest film with the Russo Bros. Cherry, revealed that even though his current contract will finish out with Spider-Man 3, he would happily return after that. When asked about the stipulations of his contract, he commented:
"“[Spider-Man 3] would be my last one [under contract] so I’ve always said to them if they want me back I’ll be there in a heartbeat. I’ve loved every minute of being a part of this amazing world. It’s changed my life for the better, I’m so lucky to be here. If they want me back I’ll be there, if they don’t I will walk off into the sunset a very, very happy person because it’s been an amazing journey.”"
Will Tom Holland return to the MCU for Spider-Man 4?
Tom Holland’s comments certainly sound like there could be a future for Spidey beyond Spider-Man: No Way Home, but they still might raise an eyebrow from those who thought Spider-Man 4 was already greenlit. Furthermore, when Sony and Marvel Studios managed to make things work for Spider-Man again – after their notorious “split” in 2019 – it was confirmed that Holland would appear in one more Spider-Man movie and at least one other MCU movie.
With that in mind, it seems as if Holland is referring to No Way Home being the last of his solo Spider-Man films – not other MCU appearances. Therefore one more MCU appearance in the post-Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness era following Spider-Man: No Way Home should still be on the table regardless of whether or not Spider-Man 4 happens. With that in mind, don’t be surprised if Holland appears in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania or Fantastic Four or perhaps a future ensemble movie.
When Holland joined the MCU as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, he signed a 5-picture deal, which included two Spidey films (Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home) and three other MCU films, starting with Captain America: Civil War and leading into Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
As for director, Jon Watts, he will move onto Fantastic Four. Whether or not he will return for Spider-Man 4 is uncertain at this point in time – as is the fate of that long-rumored movie.
