Doctor Strange had no business being as excellent as it was. This writer has an unpopular opinion. It’s the second-best Marvel Cinematic Universe origin story. Seconded only to Captain America: The First Avenger.
The public may know who Doctor Strange is on the surface. They know that he’s a “wizard”, one of the most powerful characters in comic books and that he’s an actual doctor. What they may not have known is his infamous arrogance.
Stephen Strange was a narcissist of the highest order. He put Tony Stark in his prime to shame. You couldn’t tell world-renowned surgeon Doctor Strange that he couldn’t do whatever he wanted. That was until a car accident ruined his hands. That began his journey to becoming a sorcerer and eventually the Sorcerer Supreme.
What does this have to do with the scene about bargaining? Stephen Strange wouldn’t have done this before his hands were ruined. This scene showed the flip in Doctor Strange’s character. He was willing to endure an eternity of pain and death if it kept his home reality safe. Something he wouldn’t have done a year prior. On top of the character development in this scene, it was pretty funny watching him repeatedly say, “Dormammu, I’ve come to bargain”
