4. Inside the Maximoff Household

As Wanda takes a trip through her trauma-filled life, she is first taken back to her small house in Sokovia. It is here the audience gets their first glimpse at Wanda’s parents and where her love of sitcoms originated from, as the family would have sitcom nights in order to learn their English skills.

The scene showcases young Wanda, Pietro and her parents watching The Dick Van Dyke Show, as the family share their last happy moment together before the Stark Industries missile smashes through their walls. This moment was first portrayed in Avengers: Age of Ultron, explaining why the twins were not big fans of Tony Stark. However, this scene is utilised to explain Wanda’s gifts.

While the Maximoffs thought the bomb was defective, it turns out that young Wanda was able to use her powers to stop it from going off, as Agatha explains to a shocked Wanda. It puts a unique spin on the scene from the second Avengers movie and is the first allusion to the full extent of Wanda’s abilities.

The scene also showcases why Wanda’s alternate reality was based on sitcoms, as the comedic genre was a major part of one of her last happy memories.
