Avengers: Endgame has lost its place at the top of the all-time highest grossing movies.

Avengers: Endgame pulled out all the stops to claim the title of Highest-Grossing Movie Ever. The final chapter in a unique 22-film saga – at the time – it featured one of the most star-studded casts in movie history, incredible cinematic battle sequences and some epic storytelling.

Throw in the fact that it tied up the first three phases of the decade-long Marvel Cinematic Universe story and set the stage for the next one, it’s really no surprise that it was the global phenomenon that it was as it knocked James Cameron’s Avatar off the top spot to become the highest-grossing film of all time.

However, after almost two years at the top, Endgame has lost that title to the former champion.

Avatar has toppled Avengers: Endgame to become box office champion

Avatar has now reclaimed the top spot at the global box office. As revealed by Deadline, a reissue of the film in China has allowed it to overtake Avengers: Endgame, thus regaining the title it once held for a decade.

This was to be expected after it was announced during the week that the movie would be rereleased in China as it only needed to gross in and around $7 million to surpass the MCU movie. In its first day of rerelease, it ended up grossing $8.9 million, bringing its overall total to $2,798,579,794 – just ahead of Endgame‘s $2,797,501,328.

Avatar was released back in 2009 and received critical acclaim for its groundbreaking special effects, performances and thought-provoking story. It resonated with people a great deal and allowed the film to surpass Cameron’s own Titanic as box office champion – a title that it had held for 12 years. Avatar would then hold the title for a decade before Avengers: Endgame replaced it in 2019.
