Warner Bros. seems to be going all in on the smaller characters in the DC universe as an Hourman film is now in development.

In an exclusive from Deadline, it is being reported that Warner Bros. has begun development on an Hourman film from writing duo Gavin James and Neil Widener with Chernin Entertainment producing the film.

The duo are also working with Warner Bros. on developing a script for a Hot Wheels film. While that may seem an odd fit to transition to a superhero film, Chernin Entertainment should be trusted as they were the company behind the most recent, and phenomenal, Planet of the Apes trilogy – two films of which were directed by The Batman director Matt Reeves.

Which Hourman will star in DC’s new movie?

As of now, it’s unclear which version of Hourman, or even which time period, the film will focus on. There have been multiple versions of Hourman over the years, but the two main characters have been Rex Tyler and his son Rick – who is currently featured on Stargirl and portrayed by Cameron Gellman.

More from DCEU

It’s entirely possible that the film could focus on both of them or eschew both entirely and focus on the futuristic android version of Hourman that can travel through time. It’s also unclear whether the film will tie into the Justice Society’s appearance in the DCEU‘s Black Adam.

This is just one of the many lesser-known properties that DC has moved forward with over the past couple of months, with a director being brought on for Blue Beetle not too long ago. This also lends credence of DC head Walter Hamada’s previous statements that there will be a focus on HBO Max properties for DC as Hourman feels like a character ripe for an HBO Max original film with a smaller budget, comparatively to other properties.
