The Falcon and the Winter Soldier just killed off a major MCU hero in heartbreaking twist
After the premiere of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it looks like it really is the end of the road for this beloved MCU character. Spoilers for the show’s pilot episode are ahead.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier made its presence felt on Marvel Cinematic Universe fans this week. The Disney Plus show was among the most eagerly-anticipated new TV shows to premiere this year and when you consider that it’s part of the MCU, features Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan in the leading roles and follows in the footsteps of the critically-acclaimed WandaVision, it’s easy to see why.
Before The Falcon and the Winter Soldier hit screens, MCU fans knew that it would focus on Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes’ attempts to honor the legacy of Captain America. That, of course, raised questions about where the beloved Steve Rogers actually was during the show’s timeline.
Sadly, it might have given fans the answers they were hoping it wouldn’t.
Who dies in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?
When we last saw Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame, he revealed that he had used the Infinity Stones and returned to the past to spend his life with the woman he loved: Peggy Carter. In doing so, he handed his iconic shield to Sam and gave him his blessing so that his friend could become the next Captain America.
However, in the premiere of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson returned that shield because he thought that nobody could live up to Captain America’s legacy. He then spoke about the hero with pride but in a solemn tone and referred to him in the past tense, before ultimately telling us all that Steve Rogers was “gone”. Yes, it seems that the show has confirmed the death of Captain America.
However, is all truly what it seems for Steve Rogers?
Is Captain America really dead in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?
Sam told everyone that Steve Rogers was “gone” but, of course, “gone” could mean a number of things. It is heavily implied that Captain America is dead but the show generally avoided talking about the how and why of it all.

Did Steve die an old man shortly after he handed the shield to Sam? Or maybe he returned to his own timeline so that he and Peggy could live out the rest of their lives in peace? If the latter is the case, that means that Captain America still is very much alive and that Sam and Bucky may have fabricated a story about Cap dying during the battle with Thanos to essentially “write” Steve out of the main timeline.
The conspiracy theories about Steve living on the moon would also suggest that there is more to Steve Rogers’ fate than meets the eye.
For now though, it does seem like we’ve seen the last of Chris Evans’ Star-Spangled hero in the MCU (or have we?).
