MCU: Chris Evans to return as Captain America in the most unexpected of ways

Just when you thought it was over, Chris Evans is reportedly set to return as Captain America in future MCU Films.

Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe marked the end of an era. Avengers: Endgame was the curtain call for heroes Marvel fans have known for a decade. While some heroes were lost in the battle, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, received a fairytale ending. With the help of time travel, Steve lived a full life with Peggy Carter in the past before returning as an old man to bid his friends farewell.

Fans of the franchise thought this was the last time we’d get a chance to see Chris Evans as Captain America — it wasn’t. According to Deadline, Chris Evans is nearing a deal that could see him return as our beloved super solider.

How is Chris Evans returning to the MCU as Captain America?

Of course, nothing is set in stone right now with Deadline reporting that this could be a one-off deal for Evans’ Captain America. However, with Cap being a cash-cow, we could see Kevin Feige push for more appearances in the future.

Right now, Cap’s two BFF’s Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson are fighting crime together. We’ll see the duo as their heroic selves in Disney Plus’ The Falcon and Winter Solider, with Falcon wielding the shield.

One interesting theory for Evans’ return is based on Marvel’s Secret Empire. In the 2017 arc, writer Nick Spencer took fans on a different journey with Steve Rogers unlike any other. Secret Empire saw Cap acting as a sleeper agent to establish Hydra as a world power. We saw the MCU pay homage to the angle in Endgame. Perhaps it foreshadowed what’s to come.
