Promising Young Woman’s Emerald Fennell is set to write the script for a live-action adaptation of Zatanna for Warner Bros.

The recent release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League has seen quite a shift in regards to the state of the DC Extended Universe in recent weeks.

With the spotlight once again on DC’s ever-changing shared universe of heroes, there have been some major shifts as of late, with the revelation that the New Gods and the Trench movies are no longer being pursued while projects like Blue Beetle are now moving forward with a director. Another major announcement relates to DC’s beloved sorceress.

As revealed by Variety, director of the dark-comedy thriller Promising Young Woman, Emerald Fennell, has been tapped to pen a live-action adaptation of DC’s favorite magician Zatanna as the Mistress of Magic is expected to make her big screen debut in the near-future.

Zatanna to headline her own DCEU movie

Created by the legendary DC Comics writer Gardner Fox and artist Murphy Anderson (who is the top-notch inker of his era), Zatanna made her debut in Hawkman No.4 in Nov. 1964. Her very first adventure was when she was on a quest to find her father, Giovanni “John” Zatara, who made his first appearance in Action Comics No.1.

More from DCEU

Zatanna was not a character that was regularly published at DC until several years later but her storyline eventually came to a head within issues of the Justice Society of America, also written by Fox. Zatanna was just an illusionist on stage though, unbeknownst to her at first, she inherited the gene of “Homo magi” – a race of humans able to perform genuine magical abilities – which she inherited from her father.

Regarded as one of DC’s most powerful sorcerers, Zatanna is associated with the Justice League and characters such as Constantine. She was adapted in live-action for television as a recurring character on Smallville – on which she was played by Serinda Swan – and is one of the members of Justice League Dark.
