Shazam! Fury of the Gods adds another major star in huge role
By Scott Brown
Shazam! Fury of the Gods has found yet another one of the gods that will go head to head with the Shazam family in the much anticipated sequel.
Lucy Liu has joined the sequel to 2019’s Shazam! as the villainous god Kalypso – who will also be the sister to Helen Mirren’s character Hespera. Liu joins the aforementioned Mirren as the most high-profile additions to Shazam! Fury of the Gods so far, which will star Asher Angel as Billy Batson and Zachary Levi as his eponymous magical alter ego. Liu is most known for her credits in the television show Elementary, where she played a contemporary version of Watson, Sherlock Holmes’ partner, as well as her villainous role in Kill Bill Vol. 1.
Who is Lucy Liu playing in Shazam! Fury of the Gods?
For those looking for any direct comic counterpart to either of Liu or Mirren’s characters in the upcoming film, well, you’ll be a bit out of luck as there aren’t any direct counterparts within the pages of the comics. However, that doesn’t mean that there’s no connection within and these are random villains that the filmmakers are creating either.

Both Kalypso and Hespera and daughters of the Titan, Atlas, who is one of the namesakes that Billy derives his powers from. Specifically, his power of extended stamina. So, with these two appearing, it’s probable that Billy and the rest of his adopted family will have their powers taken from them, or at least messed with, for a portion of the film.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to begin shooting in May for its current release date of June 2, 2023. Just recently, the Shazam!-adjacent DCEU film, Black Adam, starring Dwayne Johnson, began shooting as well as DC seems to be going all in on its magical properties in the coming years. Who knows? Maybe there could even be a Black Adam appearance in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, or vice versa.
