Mark has to balance his secret identity as Invincible, going to college, and having a love life. Meanwhile, his mother learns more about Nolan.

Previously on Amazon Prime’s Invincible, Mark Grayson was beaten to such an extent that he was close to death. He decided to let his morals dictate what he should do and ended up fighting Machine Man and his biggest goon Battle Beast showed him his name may not be appropriate.

Mark may be called Invincible, but that he is not. He’s lucky his father, Omni-Man, called in an anonymous tip to get the Guardians of the Globe to help him out. Otherwise, this show would need to be renamed. However, that didn’t stop his father from watching as his son was beaten.

Let’s also not forget that while Mark is protecting people, his girlfriend Amber thinks he’s just a guy always late for important things. He may be lucky that Atom Eve stepped up and defended him. But what happens now? Let’s find out.

Invincible Opening

You have to appreciate how episode 6, “You Look Kinda Dead”, starts. A drunk frat boy (voiced by Justin Roiland from Rick and Morty) is being the stereotypical drunk college kid, ensuring that viewers automatically detest him because chances are that a lot of us have met an annoying person like that who can’t take a hint. No one wants him dead, obviously, but they do just want him to leave. Too bad the mad scientist didn’t read this article.

That unfortunate frat boy was used as an experiment in a bloody way. For the viewers, this was an appropriately vivid way to get them pulled back into the show as it really was quite the opening.

Invincible recovery

As we saw in the teaser trailer before the episode’s release, Invincible, Black Samson, and Monster Girl haven’t recovered from their near death bout with Battle Beast. Robot steps in and tells everyone that he’s the only one who can help Monster Girl survive. Thankfully they listen.

Meanwhile, while attempting to revive Black Sampson, a weird power surge disperses from his body. And then we have Mark – whose parents are arguing while their son is in surgery. He wakes up six days later and survives.

Unfortunately, Monster Girl and Black Samson remain in a coma.

Atom Eve’s True calling

One of the most important things about the Invincible comic book series was Atom Eve’s approach with her powers. She has the ability to do more than almost anyone else is capable of. With that, she decides what she’s most useful for – and the answer is not going to college. Instead, she decides to help people directly. And this writer applauds her for that.

If we’re being honest, most heroes are reactionary. Few go on patrol or help out more than when they see bad things happening. Atom Even, however, decided that she can do more than that. It’s an incredible realization that deserves to be acknowledged. Not because of the fictional story but because we can all do more. We may not have powers like her, but we can still make a difference.

At some point, Mark was going to have to make a split-second decision: Either risk his secret identity being exposed or lose the relationships with the people he loves. When an android shows up T Mark’s college and attacks his best friend William during a college visit, he risks it all.

Mark saves William – who realizes that his best friend is Invincible. He then agrees to hide his secret. Too bad Mark’s girlfriend still doesn’t know who he is.

Robot’s emotion

It’s important to note that Robot decides to the arctic to get a flower to save Monster Girl. One of his suits fell before he could hand the flower to the doctor. Sure, everyone on his team is important, but he went out of his way to help her.

Black Samson then comes out of his coma and points out that he didn’t go out of his way to help him. But, as so many know, love will make you go that extra mile. Little things like this really do add depth to the overall story and make this show better than the most.

Debbie’s Invincible detective skill

Debbie is getting closer to finding out what’s going on with Omni-Man and what happened with the Guardians of the Globe. Having her be more involved in the show strengthens her character.

Debbie was good in the comic, but now she’s even better in the TV series, more intuitive and more important. With the season speeding up much faster than the comic book, this makes sense. She’s not the oblivious wife who thinks her husband is infallible. Having her be more inquisitive and involved makes her more than just a supporting character. She’s now important to the story. Nolan/Omni-Man heard what she knows so what’s next for him?

Invincible review

Throughout the entire series, this writer had his expectations at a 10 out of 10, hoping it would live up to expectations. He worried it would make it difficult to accurately rate the series without grading it on a low curve. Well, he’s also happy to confirm that Amazon Prime’s Invincible just keeps getting better.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is undoubtedly the hot topic in the superhero world right now, so yes, Invincible has a lot to contend with since it also releases on Fridays (hence the hashtag #InvincibleFriday). Considering Marvel and Disney are the bigger, most well-known brand, it may be easy to look past Invincible or wait to binge instead of watching on the day that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier debuts. However, that’s not exactly the case. Instead, Invincible is reminding people that there are other, possibly better, alternatives.

This episode felt like a 20 out of 10. You couldn’t have asked for more. Drama, action, character development, and world building were all on display. It was difficult to think about writing this review and watch the episode at the same time because something important happened every minute. Being a fan of the comic and TV series, it is amazing seeing what I love on-screen.

Invincible rumination

  • Eve using her powers to shut her father out was great. It’s great that they evolved their relationship while keeping it the same. Both aspects were important.
  • D.A. Sinclair was very Doctor Doom – just like he was in the comics. Spot on. Hopefully Marvel takes notes for the next time they adapt that character.
  • William and Mark’s friendship probably could have been highlighted a little better as it would have made his save more emotional.
  • The Mauler Twins continue to be more than goons despite their intelligence. It’s great.
  • The William and Mark flying scene was perfect. Sure, it wasn’t what happened in the comics, but it was better and not offensive. The creators knew what to change.
  • More things happen in the show at a faster rate than in the comic book. It still works better considering the platform.
  • The way Omni-Man intimidates without an issue is scary. He may even be scarier than The Boys‘ notoriously intimidating Homelander.
  • This writer is loving how they’re making sure to include Black people, women, and, the LGBTQ community. I look forward to seeing this inclusion continue throughout the series.
  • The ending will get you amped up for the next episode.
