Sharon Carter and the 5 biggest letdowns from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
1. Marvel dodges the Bucky bisexuality theory again
Fans have long been wondering if Bucky Barnes might be bisexual in the MCU. That long-running fan theory is down to a number of reasons, with his close bond with Steve Rogers being at the top of that list. However, the biggest reason for its existence is the character’s possible bisexuality in the comics.
Though Marvel haven’t outright confirmed if Bucky is bi in the comics, the fact that the character once admitted to having a crush on Steve Rogers definitely made it seem like he could be. And, after years of fans hoping to see this come to life on the big screen (or the small one – we’re not picky), it seemed like the MCU was finally brave enough to make it happen in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
A reference to Tiger pictures on a dating app seemed like the confirmation fans had been craving and on its own it might have been enough for now. However, the fact that it was never followed up on (and the fact that fans were told to “keep watching” only for it to be never followed up) does feel like a major missed opportunity.
Marvel Studios has promised fans a more inclusive future with phases that feature greater representation, and while that’s all admirable and great, it would have been even better if it used one of its first major shows (and one of its most popular characters) to kick that off.
Nobody is expecting a Bucky Barnes romcom (though that does sound like it could be interesting!), but a a little confirmation – instead of constantly walking that ambiguous line – could help a great deal of people longing to see themselves represented on-screen. Moreover, it would undoubtedly be a welcome way of kick-starting that more representative era for the MCU.
All episodes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier are now available to stream on Disney+.
