It seems that The Batman will be set on Earth-2 in DC’s cinematic universe.

While it was no secret that The Batman – which is helmed by director/producer/writer Matt Reeves – will be more of a standalone DC film set outside the DCEU, it has now been revealed where exactly outside of the DCEU it will be set. According to The Hollywood Reporter (H/T: Heat Vision), everything taking place in Robert Pattinson’s iteration of The Dark Knight is on Earth-2 in the DC Films franchise.

The Earth-2 universe will also include the Gotham Central-inspired series – which is also executive produced by Reeves along with Giri/Haji’s Joe Barton as showrunner. Daniel Pipski, Adam Kassan and Dylan Clark are also credited as executive producers and it will be produced by 6th and Idaho Productions for HBO Max.

What is clear is that Warner Bros. and DC Films are moving on from the original iteration of the DCEU, course-correcting after Justice League‘s 2017 failure while expanding their DC Multiverse with films and TV series. Also, the key to the new status quo is The Flash movie, which believed to delve into the multiverse. It is currently shooting at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden in Hertfordshire, UK.

So, what does the Earth-2 setting mean for The Batman?

This means that DC intends for The Batman and its upcoming spin-off series to run concurrently alongside the DCEU’s Earth-1 until such a time where Warner Bros. may eventually decide to merge both universes together – something that is rumored to happen following the events of The Flash. However, anything can change before – and after – that point.
