It has been revealed that the upcoming Superman movie will feature a Black actor in the role of Kal-El.

Recent reports have indicated that Warner Bros.’ next Superman movie will feature a Black actor in the role of the Man of Steel with J.J. Abrams producing and accomplished reporter and writer Ta-Nehisi Coates writing the screenplay. However, it has now been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that the titular character will indeed be another version of Kal-El .

That means that the Superman reboot will feature a new version of the same Superman character audiences are familiar with – and not Val-Zod – with THR’s sources claiming that Coates will craft “a Kal-El in the vein of the original Superman comics” and that the story will see “the protagonist hail from Krypton and come to Earth.” The report also suggests that the movie could be set during the 20th century.

Kal-El will return in a new Superman movie

For some time, rumors of a reboot featuring the Man of Steel have circled around with Abrams attached in some capacity but it was not until February that Deadline confirmed its existence, with Coates joining to pen the new project.

More from DCEU

Fans had expected the movie to take a different route and focus on one of the Black Supermen from the DC Comics, such as Val-Zod or Calvin Ellis – especially since this movie may exist outside of the DCEU (in which Henry Cavill is Superman) – so the fact that they are rebooting Kal-El’s story again may come as a surprise to some.

According to THR, Coates is expected to deliver the script around December time.

In keeping with their continued efforts to highlight diversity and representation, Warner Bros. and DC Films are committed to hiring a black director to helm the project, as Abrams who is already producing is not among the list of potential names. The names being considered are reportedly the likes of Steven Caple Jr., J.D. Dillard, Regina King and Shaka King.
