Will the Spectacular Spider-Man finally do battle with Tom Hardy’s Venom and Carnage in the anticipated sequel?

Ever since 2018’s Venom first entered production, fans wondered whether Spider-Man – specifically Tom Holland’s portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – would be appearing in Sony’s Marvel Universe to take on his famous foe. Rumors persisted, suggesting that Holland was set to cameo in Tom Hardy’s first outing as Eddie Brock back in 2018, however those rumours were ultimately just that: Rumors.

While many fans were disappointed that the film was seemingly set in its own universe, the release of the Venom: Let There Be Carnage trailer has now led to rumors that the film might be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, due to nods to both Spider-Man and the Avengers.

Is Venom: Let There Be Carnage set in the MCU and will Spider-Man appear?

If Venom: Let There Be Carnage is indeed a part of the MCU, it could lead to that Spider-Man appearance that fans have been longing to see. However, if director Andy Serkis’ comments are anything to go by, we shouldn’t expect to see the Wall Crawler appear in this specific sequel.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Serkis confirmed that the movie is set in its own world, commenting:

"“Obviously there are links between Venom and Spider-Man and the Marvel universe and the Spider-Man story but we’re treating this very much as it’s his own world… Venom’s story is his own world, there are nods and little moments just like this newspaper The Daily Bugle of course. But on the whole, he’s unaware, they are unaware at this point of other characters like Spider-Man.”"

Spider-Man fans may be disappointed by Serkis’ comments, as the director essentially confirms that the character will not be appearing in the film.

However, the interesting thing about his comments is the fact that he mentions how Venom‘s characters are unaware of Spidey’s existence “at this point”, which at the very least, suggests the future could hold many possibilities.

A crossover between Venom, Holland’s Spidey or even the Avengers can not be ruled out in the future, as Marvel Studios and Sony continue to collaborate with the Spider-Man characters in the MCU.

For now though, fans can catch Venom battling against Carnage in Venom: Let There Be Carnage on September 24th, 2021 and Peter Parker will next appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home on December 17th, 2021.
