The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s creator discusses what Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson could be up against in Captain America 4.
Anthony Mackie’s beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe character, Sam Wilson, followed in the footsteps of his comic book counterpart in Disney Plus series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier by claiming the mantle of Captain America.
Shortly after the finale of the popular series streamed on the platform, it was revealed that a fourth Captain America movie was in development. Though no official confirmation came through in regards to what that movie would be about, fans are fully expecting Mackie to reprise his role as the new Star-Spangled Man.
Now, creator of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Malcolm Spellman, has teased what challenges await Sam in the oncoming fourth Captain America movie.
What is Captain America 4 going to be about?
Speaking to Everyone Loves A Good Story (H/T: Digital Spy), Spellman confirmed that one of the challenges Sam will face is his decision not to have the Super-Soldier Serum pumping through his veins.
"“I believe that’s going to be his conflict moving forward. It’s appropriate.”"
He then explored those comments a little further, citing Bruce Willis’ John McClane as part of his analogy, adding:
"“In the action genre, what made Die Hard a classic wasn’t who Bruce Willis beat, it was what he went through to beat them. He’s walking through glass with no shoes on, you know what I’m saying?… That’s what people can identify with: ‘This ****** ****** is just like me and taking on the bad guys.’ What better hero than that to root for?”"
It sounds like Sam’s conflicts will play a large part in Captain America 4. Another challenge he could also face – as previously explored in the All-New, All-Different Marvel initiative – is the responsibility of the mantle he holds and what that symbol represents across the world.

This was explored to an extent in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, so it could be at the forefront of the fourth Captain America movie too.
Speaking of challenges, all this begs the question as to what kind of antagonist Cap will face this time around? Baron Zemo is detained in the Raft, Karli Morgenthau and the rest of the Flag Smashers (as well as Batroc) are dead. Could it be Sharon Carter, a.k.a. the Power Broker, who he goes up against? Maybe some of the last remaining cells of HYDRA, who knows?
Whoever he faces, it sounds like Cap will have plenty of conflict to deal with in his upcoming film.
