Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star reveals the story’s “odd” parts
No one knows what direction Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will take, however, Martin Freeman gave us an idea of what we can expect.
The passing of Chadwick Boseman left a major hole in the hearts of millions. We lost an exceptional man and, to many, the true definition of a hero. Black Panther made the star a household name en route to breaking box office records and establishing a major hero that inspired millions.
There’s no way of replacing Boseman, but Disney will push forward with keeping the legacy of Black Panther alive with the upcoming sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
No one knows what direction Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will take, but star Martin Freeman gave us something of an idea of what to expect. Marvel Cinematic Universe fans know Freeman as Agent Everett K. Ross, the CIA operative in charge of regulating all things Avengers-related. Freeman’s character made his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War before joining the cast of Black Panther.
During a recent appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Freeman revealed that parts of the upcoming sequel were “very odd.” He recalled a Zoom meeting with director Ryan Coogler, commenting:
"“He took me through the film but incorporating my character’s beats and some of it was really very odd.”"
Freeman’s choice of words is interesting, to say the least, but not surprising as very little remains known about the plot of the upcoming movie.
Who will continue the legacy of Black Panther in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever?
The story of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever remains a mystery but there are a few directions the film could take. The most popular theory among fans is that it will be a coming of age story where Shuri takes the mantle, becoming Black Panther and perhaps even opening the door for the arrival of Doctor Doom.
In the comics, Doctor Doom defeats T’Challa – who barely escapes the superpowered villain’s grasp and, upon returning home, nominates his sister to become the next Black Panther in Reggie Hudlin and John Romita Jr.’s Black Panther arc. If this were to happen in the MCU, it could support the theory that suggests Phase Five of MCU is building toward the Secret Invasion.

On the other hand, perhaps we could see the return of Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger. Could the villain from the first movie make a comeback and take up the mantle as Wakanda’s Black Panther? Could we see a redemption story of a man looking to earn the trust of his people while facing down a deadly villain. Perhaps Coogler used the loophole of the multiverse to bring Jordan back as a different version of the character.
Then again, maybe no one will end up taking the mantle and Wakanda Forever will focus on cementing the legacy of T’Challa’s Black Panther in MCU history just as recent MCU properties have done for Tony Stark’s Iron Man and Steve Rogers’ Captain America.
There are plenty of theories to go around. It’s understandable that Coogler and company will keep Black Panther: Wakanda Forever plans close to the vest. However, Freeman’s latest comments will no doubt lead to more intrigue for what we expect to be a heartfelt tribute to the late, great Chadwick Boseman.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters July 8, 2022.
