It’s time to tell the story of what Captain America did in the past

Captain America lived a full life with Peggy Carter and fans should see if the MCU stars teamed up for any missions in a new TV series.

The conclusion of Avengers: Endgame shocked the systems of everyone watching, and changed the game for the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iron Man and Black Widow died while Captain America retired from active duty. After returning the Infinity Stones to their correct points in time, he stayed in the past to live the life he had long dreamt of with Peggy Carter.

But that means that there were two Captain Americas in the world for several decades. It’s hard to picture Steve Rogers sitting on the sidelines, and not getting involved. A new series or movie focused on him in the past might be necessary to explore that.

Captain America pulls a fast one

Avengers: Endgame was full of surprises for viewers. Black Widow sacrificed herself on Vormir to retrieve the Soul Stone. And Iron Man died when he used the Infinity Gauntlet to permanently wipe Thanos and his army out of existence.

The other big change was Captain America. To assemble the Infinity Gauntlet, the remaining Avengers had to travel through time to retrieve the Stones from the past. That meant they needed to be returned to maintain the time stream.

Captain America volunteered to go on that mission. If everything went according to plan, Cap would have reappeared seconds after he left. What the other Avengers didn’t know was that he had other plans.

Technically, Cap did reappear seconds after he left, just as an elderly man. He chose to stay in the past where he built a secret life with Peggy Carter, the one both of them wanted after the end of World War II. But this created a whole new problem.

A pair of Steve Rogers

The side effect of Rogers’ plan was that there were several years that two Captain Americas were around. One of them was, of course, frozen in ace and waiting to be discovered by someone. The other one was in a relationship with Peggy.

A couple of times throughout the ever-growing MCU, Peggy’s marriage was mentioned but not to whom. The only clue given was that his life was saved by Steve Rogers in the war, which was a long list of people. From a certain perspective, this was still true.

This means that Peggy kept Steve from meeting all of her friends and allies in S.H.I.E.L.D. for decades before her retirement. It also made Steve kissing Sharon Carter a lot creepier, a moment akin to Luke and Leia kissing in The Empire Strikes Back.

Keeping in mind the potential ramifications to the time stream, it’s almost impossible to imagine that Captain America spent the next few decades just sitting on the sidelines. Rogers was always the kind of guy to get involved and try to help.

Two Captain Americas in the field

Since Peggy was hiding the second Steve Rogers for decades, that means he was around for all of the events of the MCU depicted in movies and on TV since Iron Man dropped in 2008. He might have been in the mix, secretly helping behind the scenes without anyone knowing.

The first person he would have contacted was likely Nick Fury, since he knew how to keep a secret. It’s also possible that he reconnected with Howard Stark, playing a role in rebuilding the Super Soldier Serum or guiding them to where his younger self was buried in ice.

At this point, a Disney Plus series following the exploits of second Captain America over the decades is warranted. Chris Evans may claim to be done with the character, but it’s highly likely he would be tempted back by the right concept and story. Plus, Hayley Atwell could also return.

Putting Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell in an ongoing Disney Plus series would be an embarrassment riches for the MCU. It could be the definitive way to tell the secret story of the MCU, and would blow fans’ minds.
