DCEU: Grant Gustin will reportedly appear in The Flash movie as Barry Allen
A new report suggest that The Flash’s Grant Gustin will be appearing in The Scarlet Speedster’s upcoming big screen adventure.
The Flash appears to be getting more exciting by the minute. The film (due to be released on November 4, 2022) will take Barry Allen through DC’s vast media multiverse, leading him to cross paths with characters like Michael Keaton’s Batman and a new version of Supergirl, played by Sasha Calle.
With such unexpected character additions, it was difficult to imagine the movie taking things even further. Well, our fellow nerds, it seems Andy Muschietti’s superhero adventure might be getting even more exciting than we initially thought. According to The Illuminerdi, Grant Gustin is expected to appear in The Flash as his version of the speedster from The CW’s The Flash series.
The site didn’t reveal much regarding what we should expect from Gustin’s Barry, but it did mention that he will just be making a cameo appearance.
Why it makes sense for Grant Gustin to appear in The Flash
As with any online rumor, it’s important to take this information with a grain of salt. And, even if Grant Gustin is indeed slated to make the jump to the DC film universe (a.k.a. the DCEU), we also have to keep in mind that what may be planned now can change later on, especially with how pieces tend to shift around in superhero films.
Putting that aside, however, it makes sense to have Grant Gustin appear in The Flash given how we already saw his speedster cross paths with Ezra Miller’s in The CW’s 2019 Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event.
To fans’ delight, the crossover saw Miller’s Flash making the jump from the big screen onto the small screen, interacting with Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen. At the time, the Arrow episode’s release made it apparent that DC was willing to put together all corners of its multiverse. Said willingness was further strengthened by The Flash director, Andy Muschietti.
While speaking to Vanity Fair, Muschietti stated that The Flash gave DC an opportunity to validate and acknowledge other adaptations outside of the current DC film universe:
"“This movie is a bit of a hinge in the sense that it presents a story that implies a unified universe where all the cinematic iterations that we’ve seen before are valid. It’s inclusive in the sense that it is saying all that you’ve seen exists, and everything that you will see exists, in the same unified multiverse.”"
Taking that quote into account, as well as Ezra Miler’s appearance in Crisis on Infinite Earths, it’s not surprising to hear that Gustin could end up making his presence felt in the film.
Could Grant Gustin’s appearance impact the DC multiverse?
The idea of a multiverse has been a staple in DC’s comic book mythology for decades, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that Warner Bros. began to fully embrace the concept in live-action via The CW’s superhero crossovers.
So, while, as mentioned, Grant Gustin’s possible appearance should be taken with a grain of salt, let’s assume the actor will indeed reprise his role the Scarlet Speedster on the big screen. Given how The Flash is fully embracing the multiverse concept, it’s worth asking what Gustin’s appearance could mean for all other DC media adaptations.

Lately, Warner Bros. and DC have been making an effort to connect their television and movie universes with projects like Peacemaker (a spin-off of the upcoming The Suicide Squad) and the Gotham P.D. television series (a spin-off of Matt Reeves’ The Batman). However, there is something to consider: Said TV projects are specifically tied to movie continuities.
The CW’s Barry Allen making the leap to the big screen presents a unique situation in that the character’s story is tied to a television series that is (largely) disconnected from Ezra Miller’s Flash. With that in mind, Gustin’s reported cameo in The Flash begs the question of whether his appearance will be just a fun nod to DC’s other media ventures, or whether it will open the door for shows like Superman & Lois, Supergirl, Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow to also get the spotlight on the big screen at some point or another.
Unfortunately for information-eager fans like us, that is almost impossible to figure out with the little information currently at our disposal, but the television (specifically the CW side) side of DC beginning to be acknowledged on the big screen certainly presents some exciting possibilities for DC’s future.
We will be able to know for sure whether Gustin’s Barry Allen will appear on the big screen when The Flash makes its way into theaters on November 4, 2022.
