Black Widow revealed that there is plenty of story to tell with Red Guardian and the Widows.

After far too long of a wait, Black Widow has finally made her way to movie screens with a solo film and it was great. The movie gave more insight into the history of the MCU, with a focus on the Black Widow, of course. But other characters were also brought into the mix, including several other Widows as well as the Soviet Union’s answer to Captain America, the Red Guardian.

But the end of Black Widow has created an opportunity to expand the story of these characters further. The MCU is taking Disney Plus by storm and a series focusing on Red Guardian and the Widows has a huge amount of potential.

Where the movie left things

The essential story of Black Widow was Natasha Romanoff trying to figure life out after the events of Captain America: Civil War. She was on the run from General Ross, being hunted across the globe for turning her back on Iron Man’s team.

Unfortunately for Natasha, the past came calling in the form of another Black Widow named Yelena Belova. The two of them had once pretended to be sisters with Red Guardian and Melina Vostokoff posing as their parents.

Over the course of the film, the group was brought back together in a mission to take down the Red Room. This was the facility that turned Romanoff and Belova into Black Widows and was brainwashing more young women to do the same.

By the time the movie came to an end, Red Guardian, Yelena, and Melina were escaping with a group of freed Widows. That included Taskmaster, who turned out to be another victim of the Red Room. Romanoff stayed behind, setting her up for where she was in Avengers: Infinity War.

Red Guardian and the Widows

Yelena and Natasha successfully freed the Widows who were in the Red Room from the facility’s mental manipulations. For most of them, this was likely the first time in a decade or more that they had fully been in control of their own decisions.

But Romanoff also obtained intelligence showing how many Widows are in the field and where they’re located. This is a veritable army of assassins hidden around the world under the control of a secretive group that suddenly did not exist.

This is where the story would pick up. Red Guardian, Melina, Taskmaster, and their current group of freed Widows traveling the world in an attempt to bring the rest of these assassins in from the cold. Without anyone in control of them, they are a huge danger risk.

The Red Room has been running the Black Widows for years. Both Red Guardian and Melina helped build the operation in the first place. They know exactly what’s at stake in cleaning up the mess left behind in its destruction.

The potential is huge

Fans would love to see more from all of these characters. Based on the post-credits scene from Black Widow, Yelena Belova’s dance card is likely full. But a Disney Plus series focusing on this mission would be another opportunity to explore Red Guardian and the Widows further.

Red Guardian was certainly a breakout character in the movie. He even claimed at one point to have faced Captain America in the 1980s when the Star-Spangled Avenger was still frozen in ice. But as fans know thanks to Endgame, there was another Steve Rogers around at that point.

Both Taskmaster and Melina also provide interesting avenues for storytelling. Each character has a larger journey to explore as their lives expand what they have been for the past two decades. Honestly, they could become valuable allies for the Avengers down the road.

Ultimately, the main issue they need to deal with is the mind-controlled Widows still out in the world. Unless they are helped, they are a huge threat to the MCU. And at this point, Red Guardian and the Widows are their best chance for survival.
