Marvel’s Avengers: One year later and the game hasn’t improved

Marvel’s Avengers is sadly still disappointing one year after its release.

When it was announced that Marvel’s Avengers would be a new game, everyone was ecstatic. This was especially true after seeing how incredible Spider-Man was and continues to be on PlayStation. After that, the gameplay came out and the excitement just kept coming. Then, the game was released and none of the promises were met.

Among the disappointments was the online gaming experience. A high-selling point for gamers, it unfortunately always seemed choppy in the Marvel game. Then, there were the stages. There just wasn’t a great variety of scenery. Letdowns like these don’t give gamers a reason to come back.

As a casual gamer, this writer was looking forward to purchasing Marvel’s Avengers. After beating the game, he didn’t pick it up again for another ten months. There was no real draw. Even the DLCs didn’t get him excited. It’s now been a year and things haven’t gotten much better. There have been a high point or two, but it’s been more of a mess than anything.

Avengers’ Black Panther: Too little too late?

Black Panther is the newest DLC to be announced for Marvel’s Avengers. The story seems to be based around the warriors of Wakanda and the Avengers facing Ulysses Klaw’s forces (see the video above for more). It also looks like Black Panther’s first big battle. The draw here is being able to use Black Panther and possibly Shuri and Okoye. After a year, is this enough to get people pumped?

The Hawkeye and Future Imperfect stories (that we’ll get into later) don’t seem to get people anticipating Black Panther’s release, which is saddening since Black Panther is so popular. It just seemed like the trailer dropped and no one was talking about it. When the King of Wakanda can’t get people talking, that says a lot. Is the game worth talking about?

Spider-Man: Not Home

Spider-Man is going to be a PlayStation exclusive. A marvelous idea (pun intended), if you want to move units, giving people a reason to buy something that can only be used with the right system is smart.

However, Marvel announced that Spider-Man was joining the team around the time the game originally debuted. That was a year ago. Since then, it’s been quiet. Not a mention of when it’s going to happen. Fans can’t even get concept art. Meanwhile, Spidey-centric Marvel games Spider-Man and Miles Morales: Spider-Man have had costume changes within the time since Marvel’s Avengers came out. Speaking of costumes, let’s move on.

Avengers costumes didn’t improve

With the exception of a few, the costumes in Marvel’s Avengers have been awful. Captain America always seems to look clunky, Thor’s alternates aren’t appealing, and who knows what’s going on with Kate Bishop’s other uniforms. It’s just bad all around. No one is going to buy virtual cash to get new outfits. There’s no incentive. The worst part is that Marvel Comics has tons of alternate costumes from their primary universe (Earth-616) as well as alternate realities (like the What if…? Universes and the MCU movies), so why doesn’t the game have much to offer? This is among the biggest disappointments.

Good news

Before this article ends, there should be some positivity, so let’s look on the bright side. Hawkeye and Future Imperfect were both fun and interesting stories. For those of you who didn’t know who Kate Bishop was, you now have an idea. With her Disney Plus show coming out later this year, the audience can get a sense of what’s to come from the character. Kate’s moves were cool and they really captured her personality, especially when it came to Hawkeye.

With Future Imperfect, we got a nice combination of the Future Imperfect storyline with Maestro (The Hulk’s evil side) and Old Man Hawkeye. The Wasteland looked cool as well. A perfect example of how something as simple as a change in background can make things better. The only thing that may disturb people is that both Clint and Kate used a sword as their melee moves. In that sense, it’s almost like using the same person.

Both of these DLCs may give owners of Marvel’s Avengers a reason to look forward to the Black Panther and Spider-Man DLC. The part that people should be worried about is the progression of the game. It took them almost a year to get it together and there are still a lot of kinks. We’ll have to wait and see if the upcoming additions will make things better.

Next. Marvel Studios: Thanos and 10 other MCU prequels we could see. dark
