Robin comes out as bisexual in Batman: Urban Legends
By Mark Lynch
Tim Drake, one of many characters to hold the Robin mantle, comes out as bisexual in the new issue of Batman: Urban Legends and fans are thrilled.
Batman has had a lot of partners in his lifetime but only one of them matches him in terms of detective skills and intelligence. That partner is Tim Drake (a.k.a. the third Robin after Jason Todd). Throughout the years, Tim has gone through a lot of changes. He’s been Robin and he’s been Red Robin. He’s been a Teen Titan and, of course, he remains a member of the Bat-Family. At one point he created the tech that helped a team of Bat-Family members train to fight crime.
His life as a hero seemed to always be clear. His personal life is something different. Tim has always seemed happier and more comfortable in costume fighting crime – something that he made note of in Batman: Urban Legends No. 6. An issue where he took a big step in life.

During the story, Tim said people keep asking him what he wants. All he could think was that there was something that didn’t make sense in his brain. For a genius of his caliber, that’s huge. Tim can see that pattern of dozens of drones and how they’d strike individually but something within him wasn’t right.
A detective at a crime scene suggested that Tim was “holding too tight to a version of yourself you think you have to fit.” This led to him going to Bernard – a young man who he went out with (and who just helped him fight off criminals). Tim revealed that he wasn’t sure what it meant and Bernard asked him if he’d like to go on a date. To that, Tim smiled and replied: “I think I want that.”
Tim Drake coming out is another huge step for representation
Tim Drake coming out means that we may see a happier Tim/Red Robin. Not that he was ever morose or broody like Batman. But this means he’ll be freer. It also means that we could see Tim dealing with becoming comfortable in his sexuality.
The good thing is everyone in the Bat-Family will be accepting of who he is. He’ll also have Kate Kane (a.k.a. Batwoman) to confide in. She’s a member of the LGBTQ+ community and will understand everything that Tim will be going through.
We have no idea what the future holds when it comes to storylines for Tim after coming out but we do know that it’s a huge step in terms of representation – a welcome one at that – and fans are absolutely thrilled to hear about it.
