Spider-Man: No Way Home’s debut trailer has finally premiered.

Spider-Man’s third MCU-set film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, has been arguably one of the most anticipated and headache-inducing superhero projects in recent memory. Following the announcements that Jamie Foxx would reprise the role of Electro (after having played him in The Amazing Spider-Man 2), and that Alfred Molina would return as Doctor Octopus (following his portrayal of the baddie in Spider-Man 2), it didn’t take long for Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire to be rumored to reprise their roles as Spider-Men from different universes.

Adding to the heavy speculation was the lack of a trailer and the release of several intriguing pieces of merchandise. Overall, these past few months were a rollercoaster ride for superhero fans, as pretty much everyone eagerly awaited any kind of first official look at Spidey’s next big-screen adventure. Well, good news: The nail-biting wait is over, because the first trailer for the film has been released.

Are we the only ones crying from excitement? No? Good to know.

Before we go any further, let’s just acknowledge how great Doctor Strange is. The man is one of the most powerful beings on Earth and casually talks about potentially world-ending spells like they’re a typical Tuesday for him. We’ve only see him star in one solo film and Infinity War, and have small roles in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame, yet his progression from selfish surgeon to Master of the Mystic Arts feels earned and organic.

Moving on to Spider-Man, it’s astounding to think that only six years ago, Marvel Studios’ version of the Wall-Crawler was a complete mystery waiting to be unveiled in Captain America: Civil War. Cut to a few years later, and we’ve seen Spidey face the Vulture, Thanos, Mysterio and have his identity outed to the world.

Now, we are getting ready to see him battle a group of villains from different universes. Granted, this journey has been exciting for us as audiences, but these have likely been some fairly stressful years for Peter. It’s probably appropriate to chalk it up to his infamous “Parker luck.”

Building a multiverse

Seeing the multiverse explored in live-action as part of the MCU is thrilling, but this is just the beginning, as Kevin Feige confirmed during Disney’s Investor Day that No Way Home will tie into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Considering No Way Home, its connection to the Doctor Strange sequel, the events of Loki, and the show’s connection to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in the form of Kang the Conqueror, it’s clear that Marvel Studios is gearing up for what feels like a massive multiverse-focused saga.

The question many may be asking now is whether this apparent “multiverse saga” will be as prominent and sprawling as the Infinity Saga. Going by how many projects are already making the topic the focus of their plots, it’s looking like the multiverse could become one of the MCU’s biggest storylines to date.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is expected to hit theaters on December 17, 2021.
