Report: Henry Cavill’s Superman could return sooner than expected
Is Henry Cavill’s Superman returning with the black suit?
We have long been wondering if we have seen the last of Henry Cavill’s Superman. The DCEU‘s Man of Steel has been a fan-favorite character since his 2013 debut in the Man of Steel film but we haven’t seen him since 2017’s failed Justice League movie.
Well, in a manner of speaking that isn’t true. We did see him return in Zack Snyder’s Justice League earlier this year through a lot of the 2017 film’s unused footage, showcasing him in that iconic black suit. And now, according to rumors, he could be about to return with that very suit.
According to Geekosity (H/T: Giant Freakin’ Robot), Henry Cavill’s Superman may indeed return in future films such as Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, with the report suggesting that he could don the black suit in the former.
Is Henry Cavill returning to the DCEU as Superman in Black Adam?
It’s important to note that this report has yet to be officially confirmed by Warner Bros. or DC Films. However, Geekosity does acknowledge that, while the-powers-that-be want Henry Cavill to return in some capacity, there are other factors to take into account.
With Cavill currently playing Geralt of Rivia on Netflix’s The Witcher and his involvement in the Enola Holmes franchise, his return as Superman seems slim for the time being – at least in a full-time capacity. However, there is a chance he could cameo in the aforementioned films, especially as older reports suggested that he would be returning in some capacity in the franchise’s future.
The significance of Superman’s black suit in the comics
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice loosely adapted plot elements from The Death of Superman. In that story, Superman gets severely injured during a conflict against the ferocious Doomsday and ultimately succumbs to his wounds.
Following the Man of Steel’s funeral – which is attended by many members of the Justice League and the larger superhero community – Project Cadmus steal his body. When Lois Lane and Supergirl recover him, he ends up at the Fortress of Solitude and is placed in the regeneration matrix to heal. Upon reawakening from death, he wears a black costume to allow himself to continue to recover.
The suit also signified the edgier and darker times of the ’90s as a somewhat darker Superman was born.
What are your thoughts on Superman keeping the Black Suit? Which suit would you prefer the DCEU’s depiction of Superman to wear? Do you have faith Henry Cavill will return as the Man of Steel? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
