Could Doctor Strange be a foe?

Many have discussed Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) characterisation throughout the trailer, with the character seeming somewhat hostile towards Peter at times. The fact that Doctor Strange is willing to undertake a highly risky spell for little benefit to the world is also head-scratching (despite being friends with Peter).

The spell ends up failing and a massive amount of damage caused. Doctor Strange is obviously furious with Peter, but it does not explain why the Sorcerer Supreme knocks Peter’s astral form out of his body in what seems to be anger. The train sequence in the trailer also could be viewed as the two battling, as there does not appear to be an apparent foe in the clip.

While it could be that Peter is the one doing something dangerous, which could involve the box he is seen holding for a brief second, it feels as though the two heroes may come into conflict throughout the film.

If that is the case, Peter would be heavily overmatched against Doctor Strange’s magical abilities. However, others have predicted that Strange is not who he seems, with theories surrounding Mephisto or Mysterio posing as the character being discussed.

Hopefully, it is all a misunderstanding and Peter will not have to try and do battle with the greatest sorcerer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far.
