The Batman HBO Max spin-off receives an unexpected new working title
It seems that The Batman’s spin-off prequel series finally has a working title.
Fans are undoubtedly excited for the return of the Dark Knight on the big screen when Robert Pattinson dons the cowl in Matt Reeves’ The Batman next year. While rumors of a trilogy have been doing the rounds for some time, the story of that version of Gotham City will be explored regardless of whether we see any more movies as a spin-off prequel series has been in the works for some time now.
The HBO Max show has been affectionately referred to as Gotham PD and Gotham Central because it was thought to have ties to the Gotham Central comic book series by writers Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker and artist Michael Lark. Now, however, according to The Illuminerdi, the show has been given the working title of Arkham.
What we know about The Batman spin-off prequel series
The Batman spin-off prequel was announced to be in development last year with the film’s co-writer and director Matt Reeves and Terence Winter as executive producers. Due to creative differences, however, the latter left and was replaced as showrunner by Giri/Haji writer/producer, Joe Barton.
It has been a while since there have been any major updates on the progress of the series but there have been plenty of rumors suggesting that Jeffrey Wright will reprise his role from the film as Commissioner James Gordon.
What is the significance of the Arkham working title?
All Batman fans will undoubtedly recognize the “Arkham” name because of Arkham Asylum – the psychiatric institution for the criminally insane that houses most of Batman’s rogues gallery of villains. Arkham Asylum was created by the late comic creators Dennis O’Neil and Irv Novick, and it has a dark and corrupt history in DC Comics.

Not much is known about the series except that this is set during Battinson’s Dark Knight’s first year of active vigilantism. The Illuminerdi also reports that the series will be told from the point of view of a corrupt Gotham police officer who works for Commissioner James Gordon and an African-American woman who is a former detective-turned-district attorney. These characters have been speculated to be none other than Marcus Driver and Janice Porter from the Brubaker, Rucka and Lark GCPD comic series, but that has yet to be confirmed.
In regards to what the working title of Arkham could mean for the series, well it definitely suggests that the asylum may have more of the focus – something we saw happen in Fox’s Gotham. That said, this new show will reportedly be very different from the long-running Fox series.
