X-Men: Magneto takes on the Avengers in jaw-dropping new Marvel series
By Mark Lynch
Magneto takes on the Avengers, Hope Summers finds something nefarious, and Mystique is up to something in X-Men: Trial of Magneto No. 2.
During the first issue of X-Men: The Trial Magneto, Magneto and the X-Men went at it. It was a fight that showcased just how powerful Magento is. It’s easy to forget that he’s one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel universe but he doesn’t mind reminding us from time-to-time.
After his defeat, however, we discover the shocking truth: Wanda Maximoff isn’t actually dead. She’s just in a weird state of being. Since the X-Men don’t know this, they still need to find out the truth. Did Magento actually kill the Scarlet Witch?
Xavier invades Magneto’s mind
Krakoa prides themselves on not being like the rest of the world. The ways of humans have never worked for mutants and this means new methods have to be used. That doesn’t mean they’re going to sit right with everyone though. In this case, Xavier and Hope invaded Magneto’s mind in an attempt to see if he was guilty. Hope wasn’t happy about it. Not only did this intrusion feel wrong, but she was keeping this a secret.
Xavier has wronged the X-Men more times than people realize. You’d figure that he’d eventually learn his lesson, especially since this is supposed to be a new age for mutants. Clearly, he hasn’t.
This will undoubtedly come back to bite him in the butt. The mutants of Krakoa want things to be different and the X-Men hoped that Xavier would have changed. The funny thing is Magneto may not tell anyone in order to keep the peace in Krakoa.
Resurrection Protocols hidden from the Avengers
Instead of bringing Wanda to them, the X-Men allowed The Avengers (Iron Man, Wasp, Vision, and Captain America) to visit Krakoa. As a result, they became the first official guests and we’re given a tour of the island. While there, the Avengers almost came across the Hatchery. Thankfully, Emma Frost got into the minds of the X-Men and blocked the Hatchery with visions of her and the Stepford Cuckoos sun bathing.
The secret of the Resurrection Protocols have come up a few times in the last couple of months. This isn’t by accident. At some point, the world will find out what they’re doing. At the very least, their peers will. When that happens, the X-Men will have some explaining to do. The trouble will come with whether or not they care what the outside world thinks.
Magneto vs the Avengers and X-Men
Hope abruptly wakes Magneto up with a message, telling him that the Avengers can’t be allowed to examine Wanda’s body. This leads to Magneto immediately attacking both the Avengers and the X-Men. Once again, the Master of Magnetism shows how powerful he is by fighting off all of the storied heroes at once.
The fight ends with Magneto confessing to killing Wanda. Before anything can happen to him, though, Wanda returns and reveals that he’s wrong… for multiple reasons.
Wanda lives
Wanda coming back wasn’t that big of a surprise. We knew she’d return after the end of the previous issue. What we don’t know yet is what she meant by Magneto being wrong. Of course she meant he’s incorrect about her being dead, but it seems like more to it than that. She knows something that everyone else does not.
All of the evidence that the X-Men and X-Factor found pointed towards Magneto being the killer. However, there is one big problem with this: The things they’ve seen can be fabricated. After all, they live on an island full of wonders. Among those wonders is a mutant named Mystique.
Mystique reveals herself?
When Mystique saw that Wanda was alive, she said, “Well then. This should be interesting.” In the first issue of X-Men: The Trial of Magneto, Mystique’s actions were quite telling. She antagonized Magneto and it looked like she was trying to keep him angry in hopes of making him act irrational. It worked. Now, however, with Wanda returning, Mystique may be revealed as the killer. But did she do it?
This is what Hope Summers could be trying to avoid. Magneto will do anything to protect Krakoa. Even if it means going down for a murder he didn’t commit. Krakoa is supposed to be a violence-free paradise and the world finding out about Mystique may or may not have done hurts that idea. This would show that Krakoa can have the same kind of issues everywhere else in the world -making it very much, well, human.
When Destiny told Mystique to burn Krakoa to the ground if she’s not brought back, she may not have taken it literally. Mystique could be setting fire to Krakoa metaphorically. Burning down the idea that Krakoa is unique.
The trailer for X-Men: Inferno insinuated that the leaders of Krakoa can’t be trusted and neither can its citizens. If anyone on Krakoa can cause a state of disarray, it’s Mystique.
What do you think? Did Mystique kill the Scarlet Witch? Was Magneto just trying to protect Krakoa? Let us know in the comments below.
