Marvel cancels Guardians of the Galaxy series with unexpected announcement
By Mark Lynch
It’s the end of an era for Marvel Comics’ beloved Guardians of the Galaxy.
Marvel Comics’ Guardians of the Galaxy gained a lot of popularity after their Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2014. Since then, their popularity afforded them multiple Marvel Comics runs. Brian Michael Bendis and Gerry Duggan have both written amazing stories revolving around the crew of space pirates.
In 2020, all-star writer Al Ewing (Immortal Hulk) took over as writer for the ongoing Guardians of the Galaxy series. It was a series that gave readers a lot of amazing stories like their fight with the Gods of Olympus.
There was also some welcome LGBTQ+ representation on the team. Peter Quill came out as bisexual (Guardians of the Galaxy No. 9), Richard Rider (Nova) admitted his love for Quill, Moondragon and Genis-Vell were married, and Hercules and Marvel Boy started a relationship. It was clear that Ewing cares about these characters and it spilled out in his writing and it’s unfortunate that the series is ending after so much thoughtful storytelling.
Guardians of the Galaxy’s cancellation
Screen Rant noted that the Guardians of the Galaxy comic series has been absent “from Marvel solicitations for the months of October, November, and December.” While it could return in the future, the series’ abrupt end came as a shock, especially after The Last Annihilation event – a crossover that featured the X-Men, Black Panther, Wakanda, Dormammu, and Doctor Doom. You don’t throw a crossover of this magnitude without having faith in the title and the creative team. Unfortunately, here we are.
The most recent issue ended with the caption “The End! Thanks for everything – and see you at Gosnell’s!”, confirming that the series would conclude.
The good thing is this isn’t the end. As it was pointed out earlier, the Guardians of the Galaxy series has gone through more than a couple of writers and artists over the past five years. This won’t be the last series they’ll have as they will undoubtedly return in the future. Don’t be surprised if a new series is announced before the year ends.
As for Al Ewing, he’ll still be around for Marvel fans to enjoy his work. His run of Immortal Hulk is coming to an end as is his Gamma Flight mini-series. However, he will be taking over as writer of Venom. He’s also currently writing Defenders. So whether you’re a fan of Al Ewing or Guardians of the Galaxy, you won’t have to worry, you can’t keep something good down for long.
