Gamora’s appearance in the What If…? season finale explained
The season finale of What If…? included many of the heroes we saw throughout the course of the season, but it also included Gamora and we can tell you why. SPOILERS AHEAD!
The season finale of Disney Plus‘ What If…? was a grand spectacle worthy of all the individual stories told throughout the course of the first season of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first foray into animation. It brought together many of the heroes from those stories including Doctor Strange Supreme, Captain Carter, T’Challa as Star-Lord, Killmonger, Party Thor, and Black Widow from the “What If…? Ultron Won” episode. Together, these heroes were declared the Guardians of the Multiverse by The Watcher.
As you might imagine, the season finale included a fantastic battle scene stemming from the team up of all of these heroes being brought together. They all fight off Ultron and save the day while also setting up season 2 in the first mid-credits scene of the show.
How did Gamora end up in the What If…? season finale?
However, you likely noticed there was one new hero added to the mix we did not see a story on in the first season of What If…? That hero we met for the first time in the season finale was a version of Gamora who The Watcher referred to as the Destroyer of Thanos. So what happened to this story?
A good explanation for why Gamora is included in the season finale but did not headline an episode in the first season of What If…? can be found over at Den of Geek.
There was supposed to be an episode telling this story (one that Den of Geek theorizes could have been called something like “What If… Iron Man Landed on Sakaar?”), explaining why Tony Stark was there as well. However, as has been the case for many things, COVID got in the way.
In fact, fans had figured out this adventure’s existence early on as Lego had released a set inspired by it, featuring Tony Stark’s Sakaarian Iron Man armor along with figures of Iron Man himself, Valkyrie and, of course, Uatu The Watcher.
If you think this sounds like a story you would want to be told, don’t fret. This episode has been pushed to season 2, and we should get its story when the next episode of What If…? debuts.
