1. What If…? The Watcher Broke His Oath

What If…? isn’t the best of the Disney Plus shows Marvel has done, but its setup was absolutely brilliant. It spent seven episodes telling what most people assumed were independent stories, only to weave them all back together in the final two episodes. It would have been a perfectly fine and acceptable way to end the season in this same form, but Kevin Feige and everyone else behind the show wanted something more, and they hit the mark with the finale.

After the penultimate episode of What If…?,The Watcher needed to assemble a team to take on the new version of Ultron completely powered up by the Infinity Stones. The team he assembles is Captain Carter, T’Challa as Star-Lord, Killmonger, Party Thor, and Doctor Strange Supreme. Black Widow from the penultimate episode would join them once the team reassembles in her universe.

There is one other hero joining the team, and that’s Gamora who The Watcher refers to as the Destroyer of Thanos. If you’re wondering where this character came from, you’re not alone.

There was supposed to be an additional episode of What If…? according to the good folks at Den of Geek that would have told this story. If the story sounds interesting to you, you’ll get to see it in season two.

Regardless of all of that, this team The Watcher assembles is declared The Guardians of the Multiverse. The team obviously comes together and saves the day, but The Watcher knowing all that he knows, knew Killmonger would want the Infinity Stones, and Arnim Zola would want them as well for his new body after wiping out Ultron, so he brought them along just to make sure the stones were separated. Doctor Strange Supreme would be responsible for keeping the two locked up in their pocket universe.

We also got our only post-credits scene of the series. This scene sets up the continuation of Captain Carter’s story in season 2, but it probably also signals on a larger scale that all of these stories that had so many cliffhanger endings will be fleshed out further in season 2 of What If…?

Overall, What If…? was a fantastic journey through stories we had not seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was capped off with as good of an Avengers style finale as you could get within a 30 minute time frame. This will definitely leave fans eager for a season 2.
