The penultimate episode of Titans season 3 saw the team scramble to save the city from The Scarecrow. But what actually is Crane’s plan?

Jonathan Crane is one of Batman’s most formidable villains. With The Dark Knight having left Gotham City behind on the third season of DC’s Titans, he has taken it upon himself to prove to the Titans why he holds that title.

From manipulating the wayward Jason Todd (Curran Walters) into becoming the murderous Red Hood to launching an all-out assault on the city with his fear toxin, the show’s version of Crane (Vincent Kartheiser) has been hellbent on living up to the reputation of his alter-ego as the Scarecrow.

Titans season 3‘s penultimate episode, “Prodigal”, saw him further than plan, toying with those around him, even Red Hood, by quoting a poem. Now he plans on enacting that plan with more poetry it seems. But what does it all mean?

What is Scarecrow’s goal in Titans season 3?

As this season of Titans has progressed, Crane has begun to unravel more and more. Initially a more calculated individual, he has now lost sight of what his plan actually is. The reason for that is down to the fact that he’s lost to the Titans, he’s losing Red Hood and he has a serious fear of losing in general – something that seemingly comes from his apparent fear of being a disappointment (which was magnified when he heard what Bruce Wayne truly thought of him).

His current plan, though, (or the current version of it at least) is to start an all out war on Gotham. Reciting W.H. Auden’s poem, “September 1, 1939”, quoting the lines “As the clever hopes expire… / Waves of anger and fear / Circulate over the bright / And darkened lands of the earth” to Jason Todd, he was referring to an old plan of his to ignite bombs of fear toxin in Gotham as he once sent that very poem to Commissioner Jim Gordon. However, that attack was stopped by Batman and Robin.

It seems that Crane is once again determined to avoid losing by repeating history in the hopes of having better success. Leaving the poetry book for Dick Grayson and Jason to find, that war on Gotham is about to begin.

Can the Titans and Red Hood stop him?

The Titans season 3 finale arrives on HBO Max next Thursday, October 21.
