Wanda Maximoff made a shocking return in Marvel’s newest series and she may be about to bring about the downfall of everyone around her.

At the end of Marvel‘s X-Men: The Trial of Magneto No. 2 (of 5), Magneto confessed to killing Wanda Maximoff. Before any actions could be taken, though, Wanda appeared and immediately embraced Vision with a kiss. Issue No. 3 begins right after that.

Vision says he is happy that Wanda is alive, but he’s confused. He mentions his late wife (who died in Vision: Little Better Than A Beast) and Wanda was confused. Apparently she doesn’t have all of her memories.

The Avengers are skeptical. Some of them aren’t sure if that is really Wanda or not. Considering that the X-Men have telepaths and shapeshifters, it’s an understandable concern. Why wouldn’t she know about Vision’s wife? To make matters worse, she also doesn’t remember that Tommy (Speed) and Billy are her kids.

It’s clear that Wanda  didn’t return with all of her memories intact. This leaves Rachel Summers to deduce that this is why Magento’s backup ended up missing. He must have used it to back up her memories. Unfortunately, the backups were old. With that, Jean Grey and Rachel Summers couldn’t give Wanda all of her memories. Instead, they give her what they called, her “greatest hits”.

Before the X-Men and the Avengers could decide what to do with Magneto, Krakoa is attacked by three Kaijus. The attack wouldn’t be important if not for something that may have gone unnoticed: The assailants started to appear as Wanda was getting upset in the beginning of the issue. Now we have to wonder if she’s accidentally causing this.

Remember, this isn’t the Wanda who has grown since House of M. This could be the Wanda who doesn’t have control over her powers and her mind. She could be conjuring these monsters and not even know it.

Could be a teaser of things to come when the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) returns in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?

Wanda Maximoff vs Wanda Maximoff

As the issue ends, Wanda is confronted by a person in a white cloak hiding their face under a hood. It’s the same person that stabbed her at the end of Issue No. 1 of X-Men: The Trial of Magneto. After she realizes that she’s stuck in a place made of Chaos Magic, the Scarlet Witch says she refuses to be killed again. The person in the cloak says, “You figured it out. Took you long enough.” They then remove their hood, revealing herself to be a much older Wanda Maximoff.

What’s next for the X-Men and Magneto?

We’re still no closer to finding out who killed the Scarlet Witch.

All signs still point to Mystique, esoecially after Destiny returned at the end of X-Men: Inferno. She may have been using all of this chaos to distract everyone, allowing her to bring back her wife while the X-Men and Avengers deal with the death and return of the Scarlet Witch. Mystique is also likely the one who took Magento’s backup Cerebro.

Knowing that Mystique killed Wanda may have led Hope Summers to get Magneto to confess something he didn’t do to protect Krakoa. Hope would never release Magneto if she thought or knew he killed Wanda. One thing is for certain, Magneto will do anything to protect it – and that includes confessing to a murder he didn’t commit. This writer expects issue 4 of X-Men: The Trial of Magento to end with Wanda saying she knows who killed her. That said, we probably won’t find out who until issue No. 5.
