Hawkeye spin-off Echo, starring Alaqua Cox, has been ordered to series by Disney Plus. Now, the character debuts.

With the Jeremy Renner-led Hawkeye series premiering on the Disney Plus streaming platform, it has been revealed that its planned spin-off series, Echo, has been ordered to series.

The Echo series is set to feature Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez – a deaf Native American martial artist who has the ability to copy a person’s movements (hence the name Echo!). Its series order was announced on Friday, Nov. 12 during Disney+ Day.

However, before the character headlines her own series, she has made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut on Hawkeye.

What is Echo’s role in Hawkeye?

We are uncertain what role Maya Lopez aka Echo has to play in the Hawkeye series just yet, but she may have a grudge against Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) due to his previous actions as Ronin (as seen in Avengers: Endgame). Her debut appearance in the second episode’s closing moments certainly suggests that she has bad intentions for Clint and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld).

Echo, equipped with rather exceptional combat skills and abilities in photographic reflexes, will be a tough opponent for the duo. Though whether she will be able to put her animosity towards Barton aside during the course of the Hawkeye series remains to be seen. Is she the villain they need to worry about?

On that note, Echo is not the only enemy Barton has to face with the aid of his newcomer protégé Kate. The adoptive sister of Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. Black Widow, Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) has got the former Avenger in her sights.

What to expect from the Echo series?

Not much is known about Echo, although the Disney+ series was first announced by Variety back in March. Echo is currently in early development and will see Alaqua Cox reprise her Hawkeye role. Etan and Emily Cohen have been attached as both writers and executive producers on the show.

In the comics, Echo was the first individual to adopt the identity of Ronin before officially bequeathing her mantle over to Hawkeye. Many people amongst the superhero community have used this identity including Blade, Red Guardian and Moon Knight (in the Ultimate Marvel imprint) plus more in other media.
