The Batman star reveals the movie’s unique Gotham City
James Gordon actor, Jeffrey Wright, described how unique Gotham will be in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
Westworld‘s Jeffrey Wright is set to play James Gordon in the upcoming movie The Batman. Fans recently saw him in action in the film’s new DC FanDome trailer and are no doubt excited to see him bring the iconic DC character to life.
We could be seeing even more of him in the future outside of the theatrical release as he is rumoured to be reprising his role in the HBO Max TV spin-off series centred on the GCPD. So Wright could be spending a lot of time in Gotham City.
Speaking of Gotham, the star recently spoke about this movie’s depiction of Gotham, discussing how it differs from previous adaptations of Batman’s hometown in the franchise.
What is Gotham City like in The Batman?
In an interview with IndieWire, Jeffrey Wright described that, in The Batman‘s script, this version of Gotham had its own unique aesthetic that was different to what we’ve seen in the past, commenting that it was a Gotham “unlike Gothams we’d seen before.” He added:
"“It was a Gotham we could touch. The way the Batmobile was described, I understood the aesthetic we were going for was something really palpable. If you squint your eyes in some backstreet of New York, you would see it appear.”"
The unique Gotham City is to be expected, as each filmmaker is going to bring their vision to the franchise, and we’ve certainly seen some unique Gothams in the past.
The Batman was filmed in the UK, with filming taking place in London, Scotland and Liverpool before additional filming was done in Chicago. The architecture had more of a Victorian look than previous versions.

Matt Reeves directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Peter Craig. Reeves and Dylan Clark are producing for 6th and Idaho Productions in association with DC Films. Warner Bros. Pictures is set to distribute.
The Batman is expected to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
