Why is Riverdale season 6 off until March 2022?
Riverdale season 6 has been an enjoyable part of the TV schedule in 2021, but why is the show off screens for so long?
Rivervale has left the building. But don’t worry: Riverdale will be back in 2022.
The CW’s long-running TV series kicked off its sixth season in November, launching a five-episode event that has hooked, compelled and bewildered viewers throughout its whole run. But the event known as Rivervale came to a conclusion in unforgettable fashion as the show celebrated its 100th episode in the most bonkers of ways.
With the Jughead of Rivervale (well, one of them at least) vowing to protect that dimension, it and Riverdale became untangled, allowing the latter to resume its regularly scheduled programming (though we all know that there is nothing regular about Riverdale).
“Chapter One Hundred: The Jughead Paradox” may have marked the conclusion of the Rivervale event, but Riverdale will return to TV screens in 2022. That said, fans have a bit of a wait on their hands.
Why isn’t Riverdale airing new episodes until next year?
Riverdale is off-screens now because it is taking its annual midseason hiatus. While the 2020 production shutdown meant that the show’s fifth and sixth seasons were airing unusually close to one another, The CW is slowly beginning to return its schedule to normal. That’s why season 6 kicked off so quickly after season 5’s conclusion and it’s why the show must now take a break.
As for why that break is so lengthy, that’s likely down to two reasons. It’s primarily down to the fact that the hiatus gives the cast and crew more time to film episodes and puts them under less pressure to have enough episodes for an uninterrupted run.
Furthermore, it allows the network more time to continue to get its programming back on track, as it can open up its weekly schedule to other shows like Superman and Lois, Naomi and Kung Fu.
When does Riverdale season 6 return to The CW?
Riverdale season 6 returns to The CW on Sunday, March 6, 2022 at 8:00 p.m. ET. This is the second time that the show will change nights during its sixth season. A staple of Wednesday nights from its second through fifth seasons, it moved to Tuesdays for its five-episode-event before now moving to a more permanent home on Sunday nights.
It will then be released on Netflix internationally the following day, arriving at 8:00 a.m. GMT on Mondays in the UK and other locations.
