X Lives of Wolverine begins and gets right into the story with claws and death.

The newest X-Men crossover event was announced in November when Marvel revealed that it would be headlined by Wolverine. It’s been a while since Logan has been the center of an X-Men story but fans were excited.

There’s always something going on with the X-Men. Recently Inferno, and the Trial of Magneto have been the biggest issues plaguing the mutants of Krakoa. Now, someone is going back in time to try and kill Charles Xavier, and Wolverine is the only person that can save the day.

X Lives of Wolverine begins with Xavier telling Logan that it’s time. Very cryptic, but things get to the point quickly. We’re then transported to the day Charles Xavier is born. Somehow, Omega Red has gone back in time to try and kill Xavier before he was born. Only, it wasn’t exactly the Omega Red we know. No, instead Arkady Rossovich had managed to transfer his consciousness (and somehow his tentacles) into people from the past.

After a few battles, Logan was able to stop Arkady from killing Xavier’s mother before Charles was born. But just as that battle ends, Logan is transported to another moment in time. When he arrives, Jean Grey astral projects herself and tells Logan he has to protect Xavier again.

Who’s behind X Lives of Wolverine?

Before Logan could stop Omega Red, we see Arkady going back to Russia. He goes directly to Colossus’ brother Mikhail Rasputin – who’s been causing havoc behind the scenes. He stole the Cerebro Sword (see X-Force 12 for more on that) and was controlling Colossus’ actions (see X-Force 24).

For a while, all of the moments with Mikhail in X-Force seemed pointless. However, with the X-Men, nothing is done without a purpose. Considering Benjamin Percy is the writer behind the X of Wolverine crossover, Wolverine, and X-Force, it makes sense. As we see, the near two year build up has been leading to this. The X of Wolverine crossovers will reveal Mikhail’s plans over the next few months.

X of Questions

  • Why is Mikhail trying to kill Charles Xavier? What is his end game?
  • Does he detest what Krakoa is? If so, why? It’s a haven for all mutants.
  • If X Lives of Wolverine is preventing a death, is X Deaths of Wolverine preventing a life?
  • Is Mikhail aware of what happens when the timeline is messed with? If he knows, does he care?
  • Why are Omega Red and Logan the main characters here? There has to be a reason other than their connection to each other.
