Sony has reportedly found its Madame Web in Dakota Johnson

Dakota Johnson will play Spider-Man’s Madame Web in a Sony Marvel project.
Both of Sony’s recent projects in their Sony Universe of Marvel Characters have divided people. Venom and its sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage have fared very well in theaters, but they have been criticized for their many faults. Meanwhile, Morbius has been delayed multiple times. And we haven’t heard much about the Black Cat and Silver Sable or Kraven movies.
Speaking of Spider-Man, Sony may have just found its Madame Web. According to Deadline, Dakota Johnson is in talks to play the character in Sony’s movie about the character.
That movie has been in development for over a year and it is set to be directed by S.J. Clarkson and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.
Johnson is best known for leading the Fifty Shades of Grey movies, all of which were popular in theaters, with the franchise grossing over $1 billion. She also appeared in 21 Jump Street, The Five-Year Engagement, Bad Times At The Royale and The Lost Daughter.
Dakota Johnson is Sony’s Madame Web
In Marvel Comics, Madame Web is clairvoyant. Her abilities are powered by the Web of Life and Destiny – a literal web that connects all Spider-Beings throughout the multiverse. According to Deadline, insiders believe that Sony will be looking to Madame Web as their version of Doctor Strange.
This might seem like a strange switch from what the character is in the comics and might befuddle Marvel Comics fans, but given that Strange is a powerful individual with the supernatural keys to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse, you can see where Sony would be coming from in having Madame Web play a similar role in their own universe.
Madame Web is normally quite a melancholic character and that’s not necessarily something that’s could play well in a movie she’s a main character in. Now, if Madame Web’s character was closer to the comic, Dakota Johnson would be more than capable of pulling it off. All she would have to do is once again channel an Anastasia Steele from Fifty Shades of Grey-type character and she’d fit perfectly.
Of course, some inexplicably may not be able to get past her being in Fifty Shades of Grey. It’s the same kind of hurdle Robert Pattinson will have to jump in The Batman and it’s one that has haunted many actors when they take on an iconic role. But if Ben Affleck, Heath Ledger, Michael Keaton’s incredible performances have taught us anything, it’s to wait to see the final product before we judge.
