The cast of HBO Max’s Batgirl continues to grow with Ivory Aquino joining the HBO Max as DC Comics first major trans character.

With DC’s Batgirl currently undergoing principal photography in Glasgow, Scotland, we are starting to learn more and more about the upcoming HBO Max film. Following the first reveal of Leslie Grace in the Bat-suit and the confirmation that Michael Keaton would be reprising his role as Batman from the classic Tim Burton franchise, there has been confirmation of another new cast member.

As revealed by Deadline, Ivory Aquino has joined the cast of the DCEU movie and she will portray the first major transgender character to appear in a live-action DC Comics film adaptation.

Who is Alysia Yeoh in Batgirl?

The character that Ivory Aquino is portraying in Batgirl is Alysia Yeoh. Created by writer Gail Simone and artist Ardian Syaf, Alysia first appeared in Batgirl Vol.4 No.1 in November 2011, making her the first major transgender character written in a modern context in a mainstream comic book.

In the comics Alysia becomes a roommate of Barbara Gordon’s when the latter moves out of her father’s residence, the legendary Commissioner James Gordon. Alysia, who has aspirations of becoming a chef someday, is a painter during the day and bartender at night. She later has a relationship with Barbara’s elder brother, James Jr and soon grew suspicious of him and questioned his sanity.

Aquino is best known for portraying transgender activist, Cecilia Chung, for the ABC docudrama series When We Rise. She has also been in the Netflix series When They See Us and Tales of the City.

Batgirl stars Leslie Grace, J.K. Simmons, Brendan Fraser, Michael Keaton, Jacob Scipio, and Ivory Aquino. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are directing from a screenplay by Christina Hodson. Kristin Burr is producing.

Batgirl, featuring the eponymous upstart vigilante superhero, is being produced by Burr! Productions in association with Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films.

HBO Max is distributing as an exclusive original film.
