Warner Bros. and DC Films have found their Batgirl in this In The Heights star.

Recent reports revealed that casting for the much-anticipated Batgirl movie was underway. The film has been in development for some time and will be penned by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson and helmed by Bad Boys For Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. And now, it seems that Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films have finally found their Batgirl.

As revealed by DeadlineIn the Heights star Leslie Grace has secured the role of Barbara Gordon in the upcoming movie. Previous reports indicated that that Haley Lu Richardson, Zoey Deutch and Isabella Merced were testing for the part, though Richardson may have passed on the project before the test process.

Batgirl begins in the DCEU

The character of Batgirl was introduced in the pages of DC Comics as Betty Kane in 1961. There have been many individual bearers of the Batgirl identity, including the likes of Helena Bertinelli (Huntress), Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown (Spoiler). However, the most recognisable iteration of them all is the Barbara Gordon character who, of course, is the daughter of Commissioner James Gordon.

More from DCEU

Aside from the standalone The Batman film, this upcoming Batgirl movie is the only current Bat-Family-related DCEU property that has made it this far in the filmmaking process (though there is the previously-announced Nightwing movie that is still in development).

As of yet, there are no plot details and it is not yet known as to how this will connect to the larger DCEU.

Batgirl, along with film adaptations of Blue Beetle and Zatanna, will release exclusively on HBO Max. Kristin Burr is attached as a producer with the movie, helmed by Adil and Bilall, expected to hit the streaming service potentially in 2023.
