X-Men: Hellfire Gala returns with new team line-up and more
By Mark Lynch
The X-Men’s 2022 Hellfire Gala will give readers a new team member and likely more drama for Marvel’s Mightiest Mutants.
Last year, Krakoa hosted their first Hellfire Gala. The series featured celebrities from the real world, comic book writers, and, of course, Marvel Comics heroes and villains. This was major. It was the first time non-mutants were invited to Krakoa. Of course, this meant the mutants planned something big.
During the Hellfire Gala, a few huge things were happening as well. First, and the biggest, mutants terraformed Mars, claimed it as their own, and named it the capital of the Sol system. Second, a new X-Men lineup was announced. Lastly, the Scarlet Witch was murdered. All of these moments led to crucial stories for the X-Men.
Earlier this year, Marvel announced that there will be another vote for the X-Men roster. The online poll was open from January 10 until January 13. The options were Armor, Bling, Avalanche, Monet St. Croix (Penance), Gentle, Firestar, Gorgon, Micromax, Surge, and Siryn. Not only will there be a new team member, we can also assume game changing events will take place once more, because it will all go down at this year’s Hellfire Gala.
2022 X-Men Hellfire Gala expectations
"“Last summer your host Emma Frost invited you to celebrate Krakoa with some fireworks. This year, it’s about celebrating mutantdom’s friendship with humanity.” – Gerry Duggan"
As expected, something will happen to alter the course of mutant lives. On Marvel.com, the phrase, “heartbreaking betrayal” was used. This isn’t shocking. We already know that Magneto is leaving the Quiet Council in Immortal X-Men. That’s a big deal. He’s one of the founding members and on the Winter section of the council. The way the new era of the X-Men has been going, there’s no telling what will happen next.
This writer can assume that members like Kitty Pryde, Wolverine, and Cyclops won’t be among the betrayers. However, that may not be true. We could see treachery from them, but an actual plot to infiltrate the enemy. There’s also Colossus. He may be seen as one of the gentlest souls in comics, his brother Mikhail Rasputin is pulling his strings. This could be the “heartbreaking moment” that writer Gerry Duggan is talking about.
Maybe it has nothing to do with villains and heroes. The betrayal could be Cyclops and Emma becoming an item again. They are awfully close on that comic book cover. Maybe he’s tired of the relationship agreement with Jean Grey, himself, and Wolverine.
Stay tuned to find out what happens.
