The X Deaths of Wolverine ending shows that there’s more work to be done for Logan and the X-Men.

It’s been years since the X-Men had a Wolverine crossover. Marvel Comics certainly made up for that with two stories surrounding Logan, Charles Xavier, and Moira MacTaggert.

X Deaths of Wolverine kicked off after X-Men: Inferno and followed Moira after her expulsion from Krakoa. As X of Deaths went on, we discovered that Moira was looking to eliminate the mutant gene – something she tried in one of her other lives (read House of X No. 2 for more on that).

"“Keeping Xavier alive… keeping Krakoa alive… keeps them all alive. I’ll eat all the pain in world history for that.” – Logan"

The last couple of issues were about Laura, Daken, and Gabby helping future Wolverine. The plan was to take out Moira before she could complete her goal. They ultimately stopped her, but not before she delivered a death blow that helped the Phalanx take over future Logan’s body. The End of X Lives of Wolverine showed Sage telling present Logan about the Phalanx as he was fighting Logan’s relatives.

"“You live as long as I have, you know there’s always more mayhem waiting around the next bend in the trail.” – Logan"

Logan made his way to his Phalanx doppelganger and began fighting. A fight he knew he couldn’t win, but he knew he had to buy Sage some time. He did just that and Sage used the Cerebro Sword to eliminate all of the Phalanx in Logan’s body and everyone was safe. After what seemed like forever, Xavier was safe from Omega Red, Moira was dead, and Logan could finally have some time off. Too bad for Krakoa this isn’t where the story ends.

The end of the issue showed a very skeptical Logan. While Jean, Xavier, Laura, Daken, and Gabby were celebrating, Wolverine knew that this wasn’t the end of the story. He knows more is coming. Sabretooth is in The Pit for his crimes (see House of X No. 6 for more on that). In Sabretooth No. 2, Victor Creed said he wanted to kill everyone and he may have a team of mutants to help him. Is this Logan’s next big battle?

Then there’s Moira. Her human body may be dead, but she came back to life more machine than human. She still holds a grudge against the mutants, especially Xavier. Her last human thoughts were to Xavier saying she wishes that she never met him. It looks like they were from her visit to scientist and billionaire Arnab Chakladar. He helped her make sure that she would return if she died. Now we need to know if she’ll join Orchis or do things on her own.

X Questions of Wolverine

  • Why was Sabretooth highlighted at the end of the issue? Will he make good on his promise to kill all of Krakoa?
  • What did Hank McCoy’s rant about Wolverine mean? Will he try to use Logan more or something more nefarious?
  • What’s next for Moira MacTaggert? Orchis may not be the route she takes.
  • Logan and Deadpool will be teaming up soon. Will the things he did here leak into his next adventure?
  • How will Logan handle everything he saw in his past? Is this something that will hurt or help him going forward.
  • How will Charles Xavier and Jean Grey explain what happened to the Quiet Council? They’ll have to debrief them on everything that happened. Which member will have the most to say?
