MGM has hired new writer to adapt Mercy Sparx movie
An up-and-coming new screenwriter is tapped to pen the screenplay for a Mercy Sparx movie.
Have you heard of Mercy Sparx? Well, you’re sure to get to know the name in the next several months to come as Deadline gave the scoop that up-and-coming screenwriter, Laura Kosann, is attached by MGM to pen a film adaptation of a cult fan-favorite comic book series from Devil’s Due Publishing.
Co-founder of online lifestyle magazine and production company, The New Potato, and the scribe of screenplays The Ideal Woman and From Little Acorns Grow on the 2021 Black List, Kosann is developing several projects behind the scenes. She has written, directed, and produced her debut feature, The Social Ones.
Jack Heller, Alex Heineman, and Andrew Rona serve as producers. Josh Blaylok and Scott Veltri are credited as executive producers.
Assemble Media in association with The Picture Company is producing the film Mercy Sparx. MGM is set to distribute. A release date is yet to be announced.
What is the Mercy Sparx comic series about?
Mercy Sparx is centered on a She-Demon who is sent on a mission on Earth (from Hell), but has an existential crisis whilst living amongst humans and gains a certain perspective on the grey area between good and evil. So think Mazikeen from Lucifer but a lot more of the traditional imagery of demons in pop culture in her true form and less inclined to commit despicable acts.
Created by writer Josh Blaylok and artist Matt Merhoff, the first volume of Mercy Sparx that was published by Devil’s Due started in October 2008 and ended with a cliffhanger in September 2009. It consisted of five issues (No.0–No.4).
The second volume of the comic series picked up again in 2013 while being left on hiatus in 2009. It follows after Mercy found out the truth about why Heaven sent her to Earth. While the sophomore series is broken up into mini-story arcs, starting from No.12, a new co-writer Pat Shanel and artist Claudio Avella were added to the creative team.
While the Devil’s Due title is labeled an ongoing series there have been no new issues of Mercy Sparx since No.14 was released in November 2020. Whether or not it had to do with the COVID-19 pandemic or the film development deal is unknown.
