Moon Knight season 1 episode 4 is sure to leave fans questioning everything they know about the series including whether the whole season has been a dream.

Just when we thought there was no way the Moon Knight writer could outdo themselves for a fourth consecutive week, the latest hour of Marvel’s newest Disney+ original flipped the script and left us questioning everything we had seen thus far this season.

Before we go any further, this is a good chance to note that there are major Moon Knight episode 4 spoilers ahead. If you haven’t yet finished the episode, you might want to bookmark this piece and come back after you’ve finished watching the episode.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s get into the thick of things!

Moon Knight episode 4 ending explained

After turning back the night sky in order to decode the location of the tomb housing Ammit last episode, Lalya and Steven/Marc tracked down the tomb and embarked on what would be an intense journey.

Following a series of events, Steven comes across Alexander the Great’s sarcophagus which is said to be housing the ushabti containing Ammit. Steven’s celebration is cut short when Layla arrives and confronts Marc about the role he played in her father’s death but their confrontation is also cut short when Harrow arrives with a band of armed men.

While Layla ducks away in hiding, Harrow confronts Marc and tells him he has a very important decision to make — give him what he wants or fight a losing fight. It at first appears as though Marc is going to submit without a fight, but he soon begins fighting off Harrow’s men.

Although he puts up a valiant effort and takes down a handful of Harrow’s men, Harrow pulls out his gun and shoots Marc in the chest twice sending him falling backward into the pool of water around Alexander the Great’s sarcophagus.

When Marc finally comes to, he finds himself in a psychiatric hospital surrounded by familiar faces including his colleagues from the museum, a few of Harrow’s goons and Layla — all who appear to be patients and wardens at the hospital. We also see a series of items connected with events from previous episodes including a goldfish, cupcakes, a Moon Knight action figure, a plush scarab, a drawing of a bird which favors Khonshu and more Easter eggs with nods to various moments from the season.

Following an episode in the shared space, Marc is taken to see his doctor… who turns out to be a variant of Harrow. This version of Harrow explains that Marc is struggling with being able to differentiate between what’s real and what’s in his head due to his obsession with a movie about a lunar god, a doctor named Steven Grant and a villain who sounds an awful lot like Harrow.

After Harrow attempts to make Marc believe he’s struggling with differentiating between what’s real and what’s in his head, Marc begins to recall the events that occurred moments before he came to in the hospital. Namely, that Harrow shot him.

Marc manages to break out of Harrow’s office and begins his escape. After ducking into a room to hide from Harrow’s minions, he happens upon a sarcophagus which is when he hears a voice pleading for help. Upon opening the sarcophagus, Marc discovers Steven and the pair team up to make a break for it before running into a hippo-like being as the episode cuts to black.

Is Moon Knight all a dream?

So has Marc truly been dreaming all along making all of the events from Moon Knight‘s first three episodes as well as the events leading up to the final sequence in episode four a dream? While it might seem this way, Moon Knight does not appear to be a dream of Marc’s.

Despite everything around him seeming to suggest that he’s been dreaming, thus making the events of the season nothing more than an illusion, it’s the scene in the psychiatric hospital that appears to be a mindscape — not the events that led up to the moment.

What appears to have happened is that Marc and Steven were somehow transported to some type of mindscape after Marc was shot by Harrow. It’s a sequence that definitely left us questioning reality, but Moon Knight does not appear to be a dream as the events that occurred leading up the final scene in episode 4 were very much real — at least, as far as we can tell!
