Confirmed from a presentation at CinemaCon, The Batman is not only getting in the sequel, but its leading man will reprise his role.

As covered by Variety (via CinemaCon) during an April 26 presentation from the convention (focused on Warner Bros.) slate of films on that particular day, it was declared The Batman has a sequel that has been green-lit.

Director Matt Reeves announced he will write and direct the subsequent film which also is set to see Robert Pattinson reprise his role as the Caped Crusader.

What is the reception of The Batman film?

The Batman has performed very well at the box office, having grossed $764 million worldwide against an approximate $192 million budget. Critics have granted this a widely positive reception from the likes of Rotten Tomatoes, scoring Certified Fresh and now sit at an 85% critic score and 88% audience score. Do note that early during release, the gripping noir-thriller scored as high as a 92% critics score.

Whereas Metacritic has given the film 7.6 which is generally positive based on 7 out of 100 from 68 critics, IGN scored a 10/10 rating. The three-hour motion picture also received a score of A- from CinemaScore. Variety was receptively warm to this picture.

At the box office, domestically, The Batman opened in its debut weekend with $128.5 million and made $368.8 million overall from its domestic gross. Overseas the higher takings were from the UK ($53.2 M), Mexico ($30.7 M), Australia ($27 M), and France ($25.9 M) after it reached its $750 M milestone.

What is next for The Batman and its future?

As you are probably aware by now, there is a planned spin-off series on HBO Max centered on Penguin, the planned procedural drama series this writer nicknamed unofficially Gotham PD was canceled in favor of an Arkham series with more of a horror tone.

In addition, the current film that has been in theatres for several weeks is supposed to be part of a new trilogy. However, Reeves did state he would not like to rush a sequel so expect the second outing to be released in either the fall of 2024 if we’re lucky, or spring 2025.

Centering on a young, but established caped-and-cowl crusader fairly early on in his crime-fighting career The Batman stars Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Barry Keoghan, Jayme Lawson, and Peter Sarsgaard.

Matt Reeves directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Peter Craig. Reeves and Dylan Clark are producing for 6th and Idaho Productions in association with DC Films. Warner Bros. Pictures are distributing.

The Batman is in theaters now and streaming on HBO Max.
