In a piece from Variety, there was a little discussion on the current update of the Superman reboot with Ta-Nehisi Coates and J.J. Abrams.

As per Variety, following an overhaul and shake-up two months back in April, following the rebirth of the newly-formed conglomerate, Warner Bros. Discovery (a move that has happened several times), a Hollywood insider has given the scoop on the recent update of the Ta-Nehisi Coates/J.J. Abrams Superman reboot and so far it seems the Black Kal-El Supes is in limbo.

While the new CEO of WBD, David Zaslav, is in search of his guru that can do what Kevin Feige did for Marvel Studios and what should be done for DC Films, there has been a reshuffling of studio executives in different departments.

Whereas Toby Emmerich stepped down as chairman at Warner Bros. Pictures but will remain at his post until the launch of his own production company for a five-year deal with the film studio, Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy will replace Emmerich and oversee their other labels including Warner Bros. such as New Line, Warner Bros. Animation and DC Films.

What is holding back the J.J. Abrams-backed Superman reboot?

The problem is actually tenfold. While Zaslav is frustrated with the lack of consistency with regards to DC’s past output and sought to “aggressively” connect multi-platform narratives between their live-action content, there is a dilemma in addressing the Superman problem.

Concerns stem from Henry Cavill’s Superman in the DCEU gradually aging out of the role from the Bad Robot-produced Superman project having yet to finalize their plans despite the script presumably having been submitted to the studio.

How soon can we receive updates on the Black Superman film?

This is just speculation at this point, but with this writer’s experience in the film industry, there are two things that can play out here and depends on Bad Robot’s progress in the coming months. Either the project will be announced to the masses that it will be canceled or it will be forgotten about. Pay close attention to the puff pieces in the current trades in the film sector within the next coming weeks between now and September.

In the small prospect that progress does ensue, if the WBD has faith in it to curb it around, there might be some new announcements to come such as the hiring of a new writer for instance, or suggestions of actors for the lead and supporting roles. The feedback, based on that, will determine whether it will be canceled or plunged into development hell.
