The Ms. Marvel season finale has finally arrived and fans have been left with a lot to discuss after the eventful and action-packed episode. The finale was one of the show’s finest hours, packing quite a powerful punch as it tied up the season’s main thread while dropping a major tease about what’s to come for Kamala in The Marvels.

During the finale, Kamala and her friends band together to face off against the Department of Damage Control (DODC) agents who have come to try and capture Kamran and Kamala. A heated battle begins in the halls of Kamala’s school before pouring out into the parking lot where things quickly heat up further.

At one point in battle, the DODC pull out these supersonic-type devices which are no joke. Just one blast knocks back both Kamran and Kamala, hitting them both back. Just when it seems like the pair might be down and out, Kamala begins to rally her strength which is when she drops the phrase embiggen before growing in size in order to use her enlarged fist to crush the machine.

So what exactly does embiggen mean and what is its significance to Ms. Marvel? The word embiggen — which was added to Dictionary.com in March 2021 — means “to make or become bigger.” In the context of Ms. Marvel, Kamala drops the word before she herself becomes bigger, using her abilities to expand and grow in size, as seen in the finale battle.

The word actually originated from The Simpsons, with the word appearing in the Springfield town motto of “A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man.” While the word was coined by The Simpsons, it’s a word that becomes a catchphrase of sorts for Ms. Marvel, who uses it frequently in the comics as a way to describe her ability to morph her body.

The use of the phrase in the finale battle, seems to have been designed as a nod to the character’s comic book roots and was the perfect term to drop before Kamala enlarged her body for the first time in that battle (and in the show).
