What is happening with DC and Warner Brothers?
By Matthew Roth
There has been a flurry of recent announcements and shake-ups out of Warner Brothers as of late. So what is still releasing for the DC Extended Universe and what isn’t?
As we all know, earlier this year, Discovery and Warner Brothers merged into a singular company and CEO David Zaslav took over the reigns.
As of this past week, a flurry of announcements rocked the DC Cinematic Universe when it was first reported that Batgirl, starring Leslie Grace would be shelved entirely. The film was completed and cost the company $90 million to make which left fans puzzled as to why this was happening.
Since then, rumors have been flying about what would be cancelled and what wouldn’t be. So which projects are expected to move forward and which could be in danger of being delayed or scrapped entirely?
What DC projects are still moving forward?
Black Adam will still be released on Oct. 21, 2022, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
According to James Gunn, his hit series Peacemaker is still slated to drop a second season. When that will be nobody knows however, it seems safe.
The Flash, which at this point has already been swirling with controversy and a $300 million dollar cost, is also set to still release in June of 2023. Barbara Muschietti took to social media to let fans know that the film would still release and there was nothing to worry about.
The Joker will have a sequel releasing Oct. 4, 2024, allegedly set in Arkham Asylum. Joaquin Phoenix will return and rumors are Lady Gaga will be playing Harley Quinn.
What DC movies could be in jeopardy?
Shazam: Fury of the Gods is set to release still; however, rumors are flying that the film’s Dec.21, 2022 release date may be moved to an unknown date.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom which is due to release in March 2023 has also been rumored to have changed release dates. While nothing has been reported yet fans were surprised to see Ben Affleck on set for reshoots last week. It would appear Michael Keaton’s limited scenes will be replaced due to test audiences being confused according to rumored reports.
The untitled Supergirl film that was in the works is also rumored to have been dropped entirely. Sasha Calle is set to appear in the upcoming Flash film and is rumored to have her own spinoff film but, this may not be happening.
As for the other HBO Max series such as Doom Patrol, Titans, Harley Quinn, and the Green Lantern series we still do not know. Warner Discovery is set to have a meeting on Aug. 4 to make announcements so we will have to wait and see.
