Who’s in, who’s out on The Flash season 9?
The Flash season 9 will be the show’s final season, but what will the cast look like when the show returns?
An era will end when The Flash bows out in 2023. The CW confirmed that the show, preparing to air its ninth season sometime next year, would conclude after becoming the longest-running Arrowverse series. Speaking of the Arrowverse, The Flash season 9 may well be the end of the network’s shared universe of superheroes, as it is currently the last one on air.
Whatever the future holds for the Arrowverse, it will be a sad day whenever Barry Allen speeds off into the sunset. But before it does, there is still one more race for the Scarlet Speedster to run. The question is: Who will he be running it with?
The Flash is no stranger to cast shakeups, with many series regulars departing over the years (all while the show gained some new additions along the way), but what will season 9 look like?
Here’s a look at all the changes we saw in season 8 and an up-to-date guide of any casting news for season 9.
Who’s leaving The Flash?
While The Flash has seen some major casting changes over the years, recent seasons have seen the show be somewhat less adventurous when it comes to repopulating the cast. With just four main original characters left, that’s probably a good thing. That said, there was one major piece of news that suggests we’ll see less of one of those original characters.
Jesse L. Martin is departing the show as a series regular as he is leading a new NBC pilot titled The Irrational. The good news is that Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Martin will still return as Joe West in The Flash season 9 in a guest capacity, with a multiple episode commitment.
It wouldn’t be a final season if one of the show’s biggest staples was absent without reason, so fans will be thrilled to see Joe in any capacity.
Who’s new to The Flash season 9 cast?
As of writing, there haven’t been any announcements made about new additions to The Flash cast for season 9. The show is preparing to kick off production on season 9 within the next month, so we should hear some casting news in regards to new villains/superheroes in the coming weeks.
Kausar Mohammed appeared in a recurring role in season 8, playing Meena Dhawan, a.k.a. Fast Track, in its final batch of episodes. While her return in season 9 hasn’t been confirmed, the finale left the door open for the character to make a comeback in some capacity. Here’s hoping we see her again before the show ends.
The Flash season 9 cast: Who’s returning?
The Flash wouldn’t be the huge hit it is without its leading man, so let’s just confirm right out of the gate that Grant Gustin is set to reprise his role as Barry Allen. Understandably the first to sign on for season 9, Gustin’s return was confirmed back in March just ahead of the show’s renewal. The actor reportedly capped his involvement at 15 episodes before The CW ultimately settled on a 13-episode final season instead.
Speaking of leads, leading lady Candice Patton has also signed on to return as Iris West-Allen. While there were initial concerns that she wouldn’t be back, as the actress initially revealed she didn’t know what the future held for Iris, TVLine confirmed her return around the time that the season 8 finale aired – much to the delight of the beloved star’s fans.
While there haven’t been reports confirming any other cast members returns just yet, there is no reason to believe that current cast members Danielle Panabaker, Danielle Nicolet, Kayla Compton, and Brandon McKnight won’t be back. The latter three’s respective characters all ended season 8 in a good place, while Caitlin Snow’s attempt to bring back Frost has seemingly ensured that Danielle Panabaker will once again be pulling double duty in season 9.
With this being the final season, there will undoubtedly be some surprises thrown in, so expect to see some familiar faces along the way. Those most likely to return are Tom Cavanagh, Carlos Valdes, John Wesley Shipp, Michelle Harrison, Jordan Fisher and Jessica Parker Kennedy. There were also reports that we could see Rick Cosnett once again reprise his role, so don’t be too surprised if you see Eddie Thawne pop up again.
That said, those are just predictions so it’s important to wait for official confirmation as to which classic characters will make guest appearances in season 9.
