Will Hugh Jackman put on the signature yellow Wolverine suit in Deadpool 3?

Hugh Jackman played Wolverine in nine installments of Fox’s X-Men franchise. Now, the actor is returning to the role in Deadpool 3. Logan sported different outfits throughout his longevous live-action career, such as regular tank-top-and-jeans ensembles, black X-Men uniforms, and even a futuristic battle suit. But, despite his different styles, Jackman’s iteration of the character never wore Logan’s classic comic book costume.

The suit was actually teased in an alternate ending for 2013’s The Wolverine. In the sequence, Logan was handed a suitcase by his newfound companion and bodyguard, Yukio (Rila Fukushima). Inside, the hero found a live-action version of his brown-and-yellow costume from the comics. Aside from that, though, the character has yet to sport his signature suit. Now, however, Deadpool 3 may finally show Logan suited up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Is Wolverine’s classic costume coming to the MCU?

Shortly after the news of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine return came out, scooper KC Walsh tweeted out an interesting statement about the actor’s return:

"“No one is mentioning the best part: We will finally get Hugh Jackman in a Wolverine costume.”"

After that, the Deadpool 3 Updates Twitter page reported that scooper Daniel Richtman had stated on his Patreon that Hugh Jackman would indeed sport a version of Wolverine’s classic costume.

As with any rumor, it’s important to take this with a grain of salt. Having said that, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Wolverine get a traditional superhero outfit in his upcoming live-action venture. Aside from some often-necessary alterations to make its heroes fit a live-action setting, Marvel Studios has typically tried to remain faithful to the essence of its characters’ comic book appearances.

That’s been most recently evidenced by the likes of Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Hawkeye and Kate Bishop. As such, the notion of seeing Hugh Jackman suiting up in a more comic-inspired uniform in Deadpool 3 isn’t unrealistic.

Would a costume fit Jackman’s Wolverine?

The Wolverine Hugh Jackman played throughout Fox’s X-Men series was a relatively grounded take on the character who openly made fun of costumes. As he told his superhero companions in 2000’s X-Men: “You actually go outside in these things?” Taking that into consideration, would a comic-accurate suit fit Jackman’s Logan?

The question was addressed by The Wolverine and Logan director James Mangold in 2017. During an interview with Screen Rant, Mangold was asked if he ever felt pressured to put Logan in a costume. The director stated:

"“…the biggest block I’ve had—I’m willing to take the heat for it—is that […] Logan is the least narcissistic of all the [superheroes]. What I mean by that is, who puts a special branded outfit on when they do good deeds? … Nothing seems less Wolverine-like than the desire to put on a trademarked outfit—particularly canary yellow—and kind of prance about doing good deeds and have people go, ‘Oh my God! It’s The Wolverine!’"

He then added that “it’s something that lives on the page” and he isn’t sure it “could live anywhere else.”

Years later, in 2020, Mangold was asked if Jackman had worn the outfit shown in The Wolverine’s aforementioned alternate ending. The director revealed he never did, emphasizing his sentiment about the character’s nature:

"“Sorry. He never put it on. We never even made a version of the outfit. Everything about his character as I understand it, would keep him from donning a self-promoting ‘uniform.’ I’m sure the next incarnation of the Wolverine will go there.”"

That sentiment was understandable for the Logan that Jackman portrayed throughout Fox’s X-Men series. Now, though, the character is entering the MCU. Moreover, he’s doing it through Deadpool’s colorful and comedy-focused world. Deadpool’s lighthearted take on the Marvel Universe opens the door for Wolverine to embrace the more fantastical side of his comic book roots—specifically, his costume.

That’s not to say that Logan will lose his serious edge from being paired with Deadpool in the MCU or from getting a superhero outfit. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has consistently balanced drama and comic book flair to deliver dramatically impactful stories that still honor the colorfulness of their source material. Thus, the franchise could put Jackman in a costume without sacrificing his signature gravitas and seriousness.

Deadpool 3 is scheduled to be released on September 6, 2024.
