The Marvels release date, cast, behind-the-scenes photos, filming and more
The Marvels is one of the most anticipated Marvel movies on the calendar, but when does the Captain Marvel sequel come out?
Captain Marvel is one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s biggest success stories. The 2019 film was the MCU’s long overdue first female-led movie and it ended up making over $1 billion at the box office.
Needless to say Brie Larson will be back in a heavily-anticipated sequel. To make things even more exciting, though, she won’t be returning alone. This time, she’s accompanied by Ms. Marvel‘s Iman Vellani and WandaVision‘s Teyonah Parris, both of whom reprise their respective roles as Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau.
Directed by Nia DiCosta, the film will see Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau team up after a strange anomaly with their powers bring them into each others’ orbit.
If you’ve seen Ms. Marvel, you know that the series directly sets up the events of The Marvels, but when exactly will the continuation of that set-up arrive in movie theaters?
The Marvels release date
The Marvels will premiere in movie theaters on Friday July 28, 2023.
The film’s release date has been shifted quite a bit since it was first placed on the Marvel Studios calendar. In fact, it was originally supposed to be released in July 2022 before being delayed until October. The October release was then moved to February instead. It was then swapped with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which was brought forward to replace The Marvels in February. As a result, the Captain Marvel sequel will now open in July 2023.

The Marvels filming and behind-the-scenes photos
Production for The Marvels took place between August 2021 and May 2022, and the movie reportedly filmed in the UK, Los Angeles and Italy.
During this time, Brie Larson shared a behind-the-scenes photo with fans, showcasing her on-set chair with the words “Carol Danvers” on it. The photo was posted in February and she captioned it “See you in a year, Carol”, alluding to the film’s then-February 2022 release date.
Regardless of the fact that the film’s release date was moved, we can still celebrate as we will catch up with Carol Danvers in well under a year now. See you in the summer, Captain Marvel!
What is Captain Marvel 2 about?
The Marvels will take place after the events of Ms. Marvel, which used its post-credits scene to directly set up the Captain Marvel sequel.
The Disney Plus series saw Kamala Khan’s bangel begin glowing, at which point she was thrown into her bedroom wardrobe, and Carol Danvers stepped out of the wreckage. The first trailer footage was unveiled exclusively to audiences attending the Disney D23 Fan Expo event and, according to reports, it revealed that the film will be influenced by that post-credits scene.
Taking place after that, the film will focus on Carol, Kamala, and Monica Rambeau, as the trio begin swapping places every time that they use their powers. As a result, Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Photon must team up to figure out what is going on.
